I'm looking for a powered vertical capstan/windlass where the motor below deck is either vertical or sideways - i.e. it does not protrude forward of the deck mounted part. This is because it will be mounted aft of a bulkhead that is at the back of the open deck chain locker - boat is a Hunter Channel 323.

So far I have located a Quick Crystal Windlass and a Goiot Capstan that would appear to do the job. Does anyone know of any others?

Thanks for any help.

Looked at the Lofrans website but I can't find any info about the orientation of the motor below deck. Can anyone help with this?

Lofrans motors...

Lofrans motors are usually mounted on 4 bolts in a square pattern, so they can be orientated in any of 4 positions at 90degree intervals.

Have a look at the "South Pacific" range; the motor goes vertically down and is a very neat unit. They also use a spur gear gearbox which is much more efficient than the old wormdrive and thus uses less current. They are Australian but the prices at the moment are v. favourable. The outlet I found is in Devon somewhere, I can look it up if you don't find them!

Fitted a 1000wt Lofrans this summer and am very pleased with it. Motor mounted sideways or backwards with four bolts. Powerful and very good value at £500.
In fact I'm surprised how few amp hours it uses. Been running it from a battery which is only charged by solar panel. Make sure you fit big fat cables. I used the handheld switch to avoid cutting more holes in the deck for the foot switches. Will fit another remote switch by the helm for next year.

Make sure you get one that allows you to drop chaon into the locker if you haul it up by hand, mine, a Lewmar, only allows chain to pass over the gypsy into the locker which is a bind, and could be hazardous.

Also fat cable is so expensive you might do better to mount another battery in the bow, the voltage drop even on big cable would make the thing run better like this.
