Lots of posts here lately about boatspeed surfing down wind and down waves at high speed. These speeds all excede the expected calculated hull speeds, which is what I would expect for downhill sailing with a modern hull design. But where calculated hull speed really has an effect is upwind. Much more difficult to overcome when hard on the wind. I never could in the monohulls that I sailed. This is when being free from hull speed constraints can really make a difference. What about this for a boat with a 9m LWL...

Boat speed in knots. Wind direction apparent.

Nice!! Loved the new one at SBS. It made my 21 year old want to start sailing again! But 230K?

Friend had a 43' racing Tri. S Coast - Cherbourg 3.5 hours!!

Can't beat that, V nice..

Our upwind max was 11.6 log speed.. passing Calshot, with mum-in-law on board, squeeling like a teenager at a fun fair!

Not got over 10 upwind since /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

I deduce we need more chandlery electronic type stuff, and possibly some winches and new sails....
