This evening ... "There are warnings of gales in all areas."

I don't recall having heard that before. Glad I'm not out there.

Mike Fish back in the days of black and white TV, and analog forecasts.

"I'm sorry but I have run out of magnetic string to show the isobars round this depression off Iceland."

"Better a bad day on the boat than a good day in the office"

Hmm... not always.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm does bind the restless wave,
Who bids the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

On Friday, I printed out a Met Office synoptic chart forecast for 12 UTC Sat 23 Nov. It had the centre of the low in the Atlantic as 937 hPa. I cannot remember ever seeing a lower pressure.
Can you share that image?

Here is the synoptic chart for 0000z on Sat 23 Nov and the pressures are well above that.

0000z on Sun 23 Nov and the pressures are closer.
