Anyone tried Hammerite on a rusty keel ?
Wil it work below the water line if fully cured before being submerged ?
Will antifoul stick to it ?

i'm pretty sure that the origional application that it was designed for was in fact oil platforms under the water...

i could be corrected though, may try a PM to H00, he'll know, dunno if antifouling will stick to it tho'. given me an idea for one of mine tho'....

regards, steve.

I know someone who uses Hammerite (smooth) on his prop and swears it's the most effective propellor antifoul so far, claiming the stuff's so hard and slippery that when the prop rotates it throws off any or barnacles.

Yes I've used it a couple of seasons on some small areas where chips had rusted. Whilst it has needed re-doing on lift out, it cerainly seems to have worked for a season and protected against further degradation. Always the biggest problem I think, is to get all the moisture out first.

Yes... Its my standard 1st line of defense.. I just give the offending rusty patch a quick brush back with a rotary wire mop and apply Hammerite.

Ive never used it on large areas but as an easy to use touchin that is fairly tolerant and quick drying its great

It's a funny thing but Blake's 'Keel Primer' seems remarkably similar to black Hammerite, without the hammered finish. Looks the same, goes on the same, even smells the same. So I've assumed they are the same and I've used Hammerite without any problems.

Last weekend I was painting Primocon on my lead keel and I thought to myself that this has all the consistency, look and feel of Hammerite... Zylene thinners (highly carcenogenic), thick and gluey... I wonder if they have one large vat with two taps? One for Hammerite and the other for Primocon? :) I reckon Hammerite would work fine, although the Hammerite paints with the fleck in them probably use Aluminium which might not go too well with a bronze prop!!!

last year, rust bubbles on the keel, grind back with angle grinder, hammerite metal primer slathered on, about 5 coats, vcoffshore on top (only because i was doing the ruder with it) antifoul on top and this year it was perfect

I used black smoothrite on my outdrives over hammerite aluminium primer, result 12 months later peeling off in sheets -therefore cannot recommend.

Last year the plastic coating was peeling from our dishwasher basket and in order to prolong its life I touched up the rusty areas with Smoothrite, the smooth version of Hammerite. I realistically expected it to last only a few weeks but six months down the line, despite the harsh detergent, its still going strong. Most impressive.

I've used hammerite above and below the water line in the past and the results were not long-lasting. I'd recommend International epoxy for a permanent job.
