Fantastic - there's a thriving sailing club that races dinghies and keelboats, no powerboats, a great campsite and/or b&b's, pubs, easy M6 access and wonderful scenery. The winds bend around a bit and looking at the hills its easy to see why. At the Patterdale End there is a high valley that funnels the wind off the Helvellyn range for fun and a superb anchorage - but you'll have to find that for yourself!!

PS Sailing Compares well with Coniston but beats it on road access.
Dave,
A lake is a lake, is a lake etc. you will probably spend your time either beating up and running back down or vice versa. Why not move to the coast and extend your cruising ground many times over. The Solway, IOM, Strangford and the Clyde are all within reach,
I started off on Windermere. Wonderful scenery and some decent pubs that sold Bluebird bitter and Jennings but I soon got bored with it. I certainly learned about light air sailing. The water is always there but a speed above 1 kt was an event. Mind you, it can blow on occasion if the wind is coming down the lake.
I moved the boat to Fleetwood. No problems with lack of wind now in Morecambe Bay or the Irish Sea.
I now spend the winter in the Lakes but only fell walking to the pubs.
My main cruising ground. And a bacon fry up for breakfast before going ashore if we have left Fleetwood on a very early tide.
There is also the pub that sells Wadsworths 6X across the causeway from Roa Island.
Wouldn't like to put you off Ullswater. Claymore has given a good answer and it might be that there is more wind there than I experienced on Windermere. The main sailing area on Ullswater is at Pooley Bridge at the Penrith end of the lake and it could be that the lower fells do not mask the wind.
I sail out of Fleetwood marina and access is restricted to HW + - 1 1/2 hours. Last year the charge was £832 pa + VAT for 8 metres and under. The only other fin keel mooring that I know of is up the Wyre at the YC and is, I think, £200 pa. From there it is about 3 miles to the river mouth. Again Claymore would know more about whether any jetties are available.
A lot of Morecambe Bay is too shallow to sail in other than at HW. My drop keel has rescued me a few times. Also It can be a bit hairy in the Irish Sea beyond the bay. If still interested send me a private message and I will give you more details including YCs around the bay.
