Just updating some of my kit for this year.
My current torch is great but a huge thing that needs recharging.
Any recommendations for something smaller, waterproof and using disposable batteries ?

I bought a Lenser following recommendations here. I too have a ginormous million candlepower type but the run time on full beam is only about 20 minutes (although it will run straight from the 12v lead). Things have moved on a lot since super bright LEDs arrived.

If you look for (waterproof) CREE LED Torch on your favour shopping site you will find hundreds of virtually identical products in the £6-£20 price range. I have bought a couple of different ones and they are well made and work - I don't see any reason to pay more unless you want one that is more seriously waterproof.

Is it for use within the boat (eg when in the engine room) or when outside the boat as a walking light / searchlight. Because my small AA superbright LED torch when used in the engine room is too bright, liable to blind me, too narrow a beam and a dog to retrieve from the bilges if dropped.

I think you need boat, something with a targeted beam and an inspection light hence my two links above.

Just general use. I have a small head torch for engine room.

Thanks all for replies.

In that case a mini Maglight. 2 x AA battery size so very convenient to carry around in a pocket, lasts 2.5 hours and has a good beam for at least 100 yards. I picked mine up from Halfords a couple years back for an agreeable price

why would you want one that takes disposable batteries when you could for very similar price have lithium ion which have very low self discharge, tiny memory effect and last much longer than the best disposables?

Probably get as many different recommendations as there are readers... my recommendation for the torches is for LED Lenser. I have several L7s that take 3 AAAs, and a bigger one kept in the companionway for easy access. Quality is excellent. About £20 each.

I also have one of those huge rechargeable searchlights bought from B&Q for £30. Amazing light output.

I've got a rechargeable torch as well, but I keep screwing up because I find that it's flat when the charger is in the "wrong place".

That's quite a presumption. I use rechargeable but if your heart is set on Lithium you get AA size quite readily too at 1.5v these days
Kentli are acknowledged to be the leader at the moment.

I use these, https://www.amazon.co.uk/UK-DIRECT®...TF8&qid=1522843659&sr=8-18&keywords=led+torch which I've bought for as little as £1.50 posted from China via fleabay. Focusable, bright (VERY) and metal. Bought half a dozen for various uses from cycling, on the boat, in the car, attic etc. so cheap and extremely well made. If you lose one (and I haven't yet) you would not bother.

I also have an expensive Lenser P7 and a collection of Maglights but these wee ones are just so good.
