I am replacing the bung in my boat and I need to put what I have always called a tingle over it. I cannot find the word in any dictionary as meaning a copper patch over a repair so now I am not so sure that is what it is called. However the question is should I nail it on with 'Gripfast' nails or should I use brass or copper nails?

I intend to keep the vessel afloat for about a year and when I take her out again I would like to easily remove the patch and bung without doing too much damage to the mahogany planking.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I am going to Guernsey tomorrow for a holiday so will not view the posts for a week unless I can access the forum from over there but I want to do the work as soon as I get back.

Many thanks.

NOT gripfast nails, in that case!

They cannot be withdrawn without wrecking the wood.

Tingle is the correct term, and as Mirelle advises, stay away from the gripfast nails if the installation is not intended to be permanent. Use planty of luting under the tingle to ensure water-tightness. Also avoid brass anywhere on a boat except cupboard and drawer fittings [and possibly a bell, which is not structural]. It will lose its zinc component very quickly and become a very weak spongy copper.
