Living down ere on the South West coast England , we are inundated with Holiday Makers at certain times of the year ; during these times lotsa local Shops try very hard to sell all sorts of Summer Hats , so we have an abundence of Headwear to choose from in our shops, Tilly is not apparent though , to upmarket I guess . mainly Hong Kong or China made .

So being of very cheap cost they are dispensable when out Boating , I guess

When I started gliding in 1976 I bought a tilley-style hat for about £1 (which i thought was expensive at the time). Glider pilots use them for two purposes - one is to stop the sun burning their bald patch and the other is to keep them cool in the sun whilst under a perspex canopy, simply by keeping the hat soaked in water. I started taking the hat sailing with me in the late '70's when I picked up sailing again and it continued to be used for both activities for 12 years at which point it got used for sailing and general wear on sunny days. It's currently, nearly 50 years later, in the right-hand pannier of my motorcycle as it's handy to have a hat to wear if I stop and my helmet is no longer protecting my (now much larger) bald patch. I won't say it's like new but it's still serviceable. I'm trying to remember the last time I washed it though - how often do people wash theirs?

The only wash mine gets is a dunk in sea water to soak it before I put it back on on hot days. The cooling effect of evaporation is not to be underestimated.

The Lappvattnet hat. Period/Date: Medieval, c. 1310-1440. The hat, which is made of sheep's wool, was preserved in a bog. Now on display at the Västerbottens museum in Sweden. Image Credit: Västerbottens Museum.

What does this hat say to you?
Gandalf?
Snufkin?
Worzel Gummidge?
Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz?

I have a Tilley, which I do not like... (For no specific reason) I also have a North Face circular kind of floppy thing that I really like and has the advantage of being easy to fold up and stick in my pocket...

I have a very cheap "boonie hat" with a string to stop it blowing off - I know, I'm such a style guru!
Also has poppers to hold the brim up at the sides for shooting, and it rolls up very small

Not a fan of baseball caps - I always then burn the tops of my ears

Poppers?? Now there's posh. Nice to hear someone else call it a boonie hat though - first time I've heard it since I was demobbed. My bit of string was improvised by punching holes in the rim. It's really far too small for me but I hate having my view upwards blocked - a trait from my flying days.

It says the wearer was one of the coneheads.

I have a modern version: Paragliding Direct | Skyman Felt Hat | purchase online

I was given it... :0)

Tilley - We used to sell them. I had a cotton one bought to fit and it shrunk to the point where I had to stretch it over my knee very time I wore it. Very annoying. After it was stolen at the Golden Temple I bought one a few sizes too big. This one now fits perfectly after washing. (You should wash them regularly to get the sweat out as it turns them yellow and likewise any salt crystals which would keep it damp.)

And that's why you buy a Tilley.. Worn out they will replace it, Lost it they will give you a good discount on a new one.
No, it’s not a simple as that. Mine blew off my head and down a cliff. It hung on a ledge 20ft down and I thought no problem, I’ll lake a photo and get Tilley to send me a new one. I then discovered the warranty requires you register with them within 3 months and of course I didn’t do that and there are all kind of get out clauses. I ended up tying myself onto a tree and casting my fishing rod out with a big sharp hook to recover it.

My favorite hat is now a favorite ball cap with a bump cap insert fitted. The cost about $10 and fit inside most ball caps and many brimmed hats. Saves my bald head from thumps in the companionway and even standing up under the boom (it will NOT help in the event of an accidental jibe). It also helps keep the hat on my head in the wind!

You should have sent them a video of that dedication and got some sort of award!
