They are a "bent pipe" technology so the Satellite needs to SEE you and land at the same time.

Well the information above is total drivel! Sorry.
Thuraya is a Geostationary system that uses spot beams just like Inmarsat Mini-M. Different antenna technology. The only restriction seems the ability to get satellites up, hence the coverage. The 3rd Satellite is ready to go up soon.
The launch system is my favourite: Boeing Sea launch that I was fortunate to actually meet while it was out for testing.
