Thoughts and prayers are with oGaryo tonight

You can die from a multiple of other reasons too , not related to the heart ,which lifestyle and enviroment you may or may not be able to influence

How ever when you use up your predetermined No of beats -it stops - your lifestyle determines how fast you use them up as Rafiki suggest you may be able to infuence how you use your remaining beats in the in an economical way .
Look arround many a fitness freak triathlon 40 ,50 something drops dead heart stops cardiac arrest MI ( despite a allegded slightly lower resting heartbeat ) .
The PM shows no pathology . Used up all the beats

Glad to hear Gary is on the mend and sorry for the drift but in my view portofino has the wrong idea. What you're talking about is epiphenomenon. The apparent relationship between heart beats and lifespan. There is no predetermined number of beats and lifespan is affected by so many factors often outside of our control. Resting heart rate is used as an indicator of overall fitness but not in isolation so it only tells a tiny part of the story of us.

Raised cardiac enzymes, as I understand is the case with Gary, come about due to cardiac muscle cells being damaged due to lack of oxygen which is why it is an indicator of a heart attack. It is also thought it can be caused by other things including periods of ultra intense activity e.g a massive long bike ride!!! At any rate, this damage can be transient or permanent. Again, raised enzymes is not used for diagnosis in isolation and the doctors will look for things like ECG changes which again I believe Gary did not have which is great.

There are a whole raft of tests for looking at heart health such as exercise tolerance tests, echo cardiogram etc... Never heard anyone counting up the likely beats you have used up.

Health is all about managing the decline I'm afraid and worry and stress certainly bring about life limiting changes so don't worry about beats, don't abuse yourself too much, be greatful for medical advances and enjoy life.

Just a blip I'm sure Gary and the very best wishes and again, sorry for the drift.
Ps any sort of household chores are to be avoided for at least 2 weeks :):):)

Wishing you a speedy and full recovery Gary.
keep thinking about the positives mate, at least its the end of your boating season anyway (imagine if you owned a Flybridge ...........it would still be mid season !!

Best wishes
Pete

oh booger, only just seen this thread. Best wishes Gary, get out soon! If you get Robin Choudhury as your cardiologist, say hi from me, he might remember me (not as a patient)

Very sorry to hear about this but it is sounding as though you are on the mend Gary so here's wishing you a speedy recovery

Very sad as it was for a good cause. Hope he makes a full recovery.

I thought I was having a heart attack once, tightness around the chest, difficulty breathing etc etc whilst on the London to Brighton bike ride, ironically to raise funds for The British Heart Foundation!

Only tried it once, now I just sponsor others

Guys, just out of theatre for the Angiogram and I am walking on air not due to being sedated as I asked not to be but because it's confirmed absolute that all my blood vessels are normal and if I heard right, the heart is also functioning normally and is undamaged. The remaining worry is the irregular ECG. They're suspecting viral infection or maybe a clot that passed through. Not out of the woods yet until I receive the final diagnosis combining the Angiogram, ultrasound results and further ECG's but am over the moon it's not coronary heart disease. Wooooooooo hoooooooooo :)

Really Great News Bud, going to OV tomorrow for a boat test[as I mentioned I might buy one at a boat stand at SIBS ] so will look out for BB just need you to be down here as well, but enjoy the nurses well you can.

Brilliant news. I've just warned a neighbour (55 year old airline pilot, with a rather sedentary work life) who's cycling up to 50 miles a day in preparation for a Lands End to J o'G charity bike ride to take it carefully. Hurry back, the boat's pining for you!
