Thoughts and prayers are with oGaryo tonight

That clearly leads to lack of beer being the culprit, going to fix that when I'm outta here!
LOL, why wait? Tell the nurse to bring you some PDQ. They are supposed to take care of you, aren't they?! :D
Very happy to see you already posting around here!

Very sorry to hear this news. I've tried to send you a pm Gary, but your inbox is full!

Can you pm me with which hospital you are in and when you are likely to be released?

Get yourself well soon

John

Hi John, I'm in Central Milton Keynes MAU ward at present but will likely be transferred to Oxford for an Angiogram and corrective treatment to address whatever 's found which will in turn dictate the release date. Having an ultrasound scan later today whilst here. They've been very thorough and am impressed with the NHS.

Thanks to everyone again for your kind words, it's heart warming (literally).

Latest results are focused on 4 things. Firstly all vitals are stable and good. A slight blip on the ECG this morning from the side of the chest may indicate some damage to the side wall of the heart. Troponin levels have halved overnight so that's going the right way indicating the heart is no longer leaking enzymes. CRP (C-reactive protein)readings have been up in the 30 's indicating inflamation or viral infection which in turn can trigger the Troponin results (apparently). Doc is pretty sure it's a heart attack hence going for the scan and Angiogram but there's a chance it's viral especially considering I had a temperature of 101f on Monday and I didn't have an attack during the cycle race nor chest pain which would suggest blood feed to and from the heart is ok.

The next few days will tell for sure.

Cheers Gary

P.s. inbox cleared out :)

I had a PE in France this summer, raced back across the channel...called my GP about 12 miles off the Manacles and he diagnosed over the phone, booked me a bed in medical admissions and met me to stick me with a fragmin injection...spent 5 days in NHS care and it was a humbling experience...You are in safe hands I am sure, we are so fortunate to have access to such an amazing health care system....but keep pushing them and make sure they leave no stone unturned!

While I'm posting, perhaps this is a warning sign Gary and now is the time to slow down, sell the mobo and buy something with a sail? :)

I too am a keen amateur cyclist (almost exactly your age) and really feel for you - it would be such bad luck to have had a latent viral infection whilst engaging in a race.

Re NHS, my dad had a back op on private health insurance yesterday. Surgeon said it was a bit tricky so he'd rather use the NHS equipment, which he claimed was "far better" than the private hospital's gear. My old-man was therefore wheeled from the private hospital to the NHS one for the op and back again afterwards!

Thoughts are with you and may I wish you a speedy and 100% recovery.

There are threads that surprise and threads that shock and this one certainly got me. :ambivalence:

After all your effort to get fit and take on the event, what a bummer to get this type of reward.

You did a good job on the fund raising, so now do a better job on your recovery.
Do as your told and give yourself the best chance of repair.:encouragement:

See you down there.

Roger.

Hope all is well and wish speedy recovery.

FWIW - folks --- think of it like this a heart has genetically programmed only "so many beats "
So vigorous excercise especially in over 40's - you are basically using them up faster .
This is not generally known in the public domain

I assume you wrote this tongue in cheek? If you are fit, your resting heart rate is considerably lower, hence average rate over the day is lower for a fit person. Just consider how much time you would spend on vigorous excercise? An hour or 2 a day, so the other 22 od the rate would be 10-15 bpm lower, so lower average per day.

There are 13,000 folk in the UK over 100, so how does that stack up

wish a speedy (and FULL!) recovery!

very much doubt that training and the 70odd miles are to blame for this though.

cheers

You can die from a multiple of other reasons too , not related to the heart ,which lifestyle and enviroment you may or may not be able to influence

How ever when you use up your predetermined No of beats -it stops - your lifestyle determines how fast you use them up as Rafiki suggest you may be able to infuence how you use your remaining beats in the in an economical way .
Look arround many a fitness freak triathlon 40 ,50 something drops dead heart stops cardiac arrest MI ( despite a allegded slightly lower resting heartbeat ) .
The PM shows no pathology . Used up all the beats

Spoke to Gary this afternoon, and he sounded quite chirpy given the circumstances, looking forward to completing the tests, and getting home for some RnR. I think he will soon be back in the saddle. Good on you Gary :D

I hope you are joking ... if you really believe that, then "Oh Dear".
