Thoughts and prayers are with oGaryo tonight

Good news Gary , make the most of some chillaxing . Pericarditis is no fun either , had that about 10 years back. Must run in the family ;)

Got some great news today, subject to final reviews of the ultrasound scan it's not a heart attack! Thank goodness for that. They're pretty sure it's viral inflamation of the heart following the exertions on the ride coupled with having a virus and being tipped over the breaking point with work stress on the Tuesday. Similar to pericarditis that I had at the age of 18 but this time affecting the heart rather than the sack around it. Booked in for a heart MRI in a month or so to ascertain if there is any lasting damage which they say is unlikely. Dodgy ECG results are being attributed to inflamation too. All post heart attack meds have been stopped and I am now being prescribed anti inflammatory drugs. Couple of weeks off work to relax and let the swelling subside and I should be ready to get back on the bike. Today is a good day :)

See you on the water soon guys, happy boating in the meantime and thanks so much for your support

A good day indeed! Every best wish for a continued speedy recovery.

Gary
Really glad to hear your positive news. Wishing you a good recovery. I've been off the forum for some months myself due to a 'heart glitch' at the start of the season attributed to a viral infection. A bit scary and dramatic for the first 48hrs in hospital, but turned out ok in the end thank God. Take care of yourself and do not underestimate how much time it might take to feel fully well again. Medication while a great precaution can be worse than the cure with cardiac treatments and may take some time to work its way out of your system, as well as your body getting the time to recover. Glad to hear no damage incurred. Hopefully you will be back on the water in no time.
Best wishes and prayers for complete and speedy recovery.
Noel

Reflecting on life as you do occasionally, this event crept back into my mind along with a few comments at the time when organising a forum cycle ride afterwards to say thanks to those who looked after my old ticker when it went a bit pear shaped.. some comments were made along the lines of "don't do it", "you'll kill yourself", "leave this exercise lark to the young'uns" and the like.

Whilst the comments were well intended it did smart a little at the time as I thought that was it, no more energetic fun stuff for yours truly, time to take it easy. But glad to say I did the opposite and this post is to let those know from 3 years ago that things have gone from strength to strength culminating in last weekend where I took part in a 207 mile cycle ride called Chase The Sun from the Isle Of Sheppey to Burnham On Sea with over 13 hours in the saddle at temperatures averaging mid 80's and topping out at 93 degrees.

The beautiful thing about it was cycling down the Cheddar Gorge at 40 mph with the biggest cheesiest grin on my face as a 54 year old knowing my fitness levels and overall health are back to where they were as a much younger man, there's no greater feeling in mid life (other than buying a boat 2ft longer than the existing boat :).

I've attached a couple of pictures that show the ride and the photo at the end of the ride looking quite proud of the achievement. I've also snuck in a cheeky photo of myself and the good lady wife on Bizzy Bee at this years IOW festival Berthed in Island Harbour in a lame attempt to try and keep some element of boatiness in the post :)

Paul (Rafiki), myself and hopefully a few others will be cycling around the IOW weekend after next too and I hope to meet up with some boaty friends that I've not seen for what seems a very long time and hopefully some new faces too.. please come and say hello if you're in Yarmouth at anytime over that weekend (of the 1st July). There's always a cold one in the fridge in BB.

If you're in London on the 30th July, I am also taking part in the Prudential Ride 100 race starting at 6:16 am and hoping to finish the ride within 6 hours. A beer after is on the cards if you're around :)

Hopefully see some of you on the wet stuff this season.

All the best Gary

Well done Gary. Its great to see a success story. You must have a very tolerant SWMBO to let you go cycling and boating ! I am not a cyclist myself but I used to organise the Solent Coasts Cycling Challenge for charity and completely understand the amazing smiles and satisfaction of the guys and gals as they finish the event, but to overcome the challenges that you have had, commands my greatest respect.

Top job Gary , fantastic positive attitude and achievement , hope the legs have recovered enough to be able to walk to the bar ;) . And a big plus 1 to rubberduck , just having a quick nosey in here and thinking OH SHIT !!.

I came downstairs at 3am this morning to take some meds & saw this, didn't read date & thought OMG, not again !!
Please do not do that, nearly gave me a heart attack.
Mmm yes. A copy of the post below landed in my InBox, I saw the title and skim read the text and thought somebody was "crossing the bar" - not just walking to it!
Hope the wobbly legs recover.:encouragement:

what other sort of grin could you have had in Cheddar gorge?
Seriously though, well done. If I'm honest, I need to follow your example. Any tips to help get a rather overweight, approaching 50year old, in better shape? Were you a cyclist before, or did you take it up post problem?
