I need a bigger boat and was going to look at a Fairline Phantom 42 1999 with Volvo 63P`s, does anyone have any experience with this boat good or bad?

Had a 1999 with those engines, from 1999-2003. Great boat imho. Not much I can say against it. Some say the windscreens were prone to leaks, but ours never did despite some heavy weather. Good cabins. Bathroom for seocnd cabin is a bit poxy by today's standards, but ok. Good engine access. Nice big lazerette. Good flybridge access (stairs) and flybridge layout. Nice big swim platform. There are only two cabins but the saloon sofa is a metal action sofa bed so decent enough for occasional extra guests. The 63ps are bullet proof but not as good mpg as modern EVC. We got about 0.8mpg. Top speed quite decent 28kts ish. Overall a fine boat, good looking imho. I'd buy one again if looking for 42 footer

1999 was the year they facelifted the window shapes, so get a lateish one if you can. When viewing one, if you want to check it against the supplied paperwork, note that the hull number is on a plate that you see by lifting the carpet in the bottom of the starboard cabin wardrobe

Here's ours, in 2003 in France, though she is back in UK these days (last seen at Cowes)

Hi Ian,

Nice choice of boat and you probably need to go here to get an upgrade. The 63P's you know, so you'll know what to expect.

Initial reaction is that you'll enjoy the extra space and smoother ride but possibly be disappointed with the performance. I would guestimate that the P42 really needs Tamd74P's to make her fly in your style! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Then again, I see them out on the water and they still look good on the plane. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ive beem informed that the 74p`s leave alot of unburnt fuel on the stern and ride bow high, also with 6 people on the fly they tend to wander at speed.

lets start an argument -
/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif buy a sealine instead, great value second hand, lots of room etc. I think better fuel consumption too - spend the money you will save on diesel etc.
yes the build quality behind the fridge is lacking but who looks there ??? Same engines, gearboxes and electricery

no thanks, dont like them or the way they are screwed together, i know a few owners and although they are resonably happy with them they still question the build issues, im a Princess/ Fairline man and you wont shift me from that position.

I didn't think they did p42 with 74p engines??

The performance with 63p is fine. Easy 22 knot cruising at low rpm. 28kt top if you want it (but who does?). The 63p are not particulary smokey even on start up but they do leave soot on transom and it needs a clean after say 200nm.

Never had a problem with 6 people on the flybridge at any speed, no wandering...

Yes nice 42/5 for me good dry ride choice of three engine sizes extending bathing platform gives 50ft size cockpit at anchor etc (and they dont have orrible blue check tartan settees)

Fairline build quality?

This months MBM carries an article in which they report on the 200 hours logged on "Calm Voyager", their Phantom 40. Seems like Fairline have the same niggling, annoying faults as every other manufacturer....."we found that poorly fitting doors, and cheaply made internal fixings are small fry"......really? Seems it's only big fry when it's a Sealine, (of which we have owned seven, and had no real problems with any).

Re: Fairline build quality?

I take on board your comments ,one thing i forgot to mention but the reason for a p42 was that also fits budget ,under 200k, wont get a 42/5 for that.

Re: Fairline build quality?

i agree but i cant get a 42ft Princess for my budget ,i looked at a 40 but bed is smaller than my 360 no worktop space if you want to open the oven door and being 6ft 4 my knees would impact on the flybridge consol in lumpy weather ,ouch.

Havent sat on a Phantom 42 yet so dont know what the sterring position is like on that yet.
