Hello, I'm back. Mr 6d is right, I have been up to my neck having taken on a new bigger job and having to recruit a load of peeps to be my wing men. I like single handing but some single handed sailing is not so much fun. Berthing in a strong river current with F7 wind was not. I managed by good luck not judgement. Good judgement would have seen me at home.

I hope that wherever I end up there is not quite so much challenge in adverse conditions.

Time is the one thing that is in short supply for me for the next couple of years, so easy access was a key consideration.

Lots of chat on here about the merits or not of SYH. I've been in there a few times, and also Shotley, Wolverston, Fox's and Ipswich. I liked them all, but was underwhelmed by facilities generally and apart from Ipswich you need a car. I want to be able to move the boat on and leave it without having to come back for a car, so train and bus access is important.

Titchmarsh is quite a long way up the creek, but seems to tick a lot of my boxes. A mate of mine is going to be there next year so may well go with that as my choice. No one has convinced me that the others offer anything extra. What is access like in a North Easterly blow, because there is a lot of shallow water on the way in, and I don't want to have the Wells experience of having to go elsewhere.

I don't think I have ever had a post with so many replies. I usually kill threads dead.;)

Access without a car

I wouldn't berth at SYH without my own transport - it's too far away from the bus stop on Old Felixstowe road (I don't like walking!).

Which is what I said originally before the anti-SYH for all reasons lot put their oar in!

Got to be Ipswich Central IMO.

Titchmarsh is a very long walk from any kind of public transport! If you don't have a car the only way to get there is by taxi.

Woolverstone is close to buses into Ipswich, (10 mins walk to the top of the road) but they are only every couple of hours in the daytime and rare or non existent at weekends now.

Titchmarsh transport

Hadn't been into Titchmarsh before but had to leave boat there and return by train to collect this summer. Several treks to town. I walked from Walton station with a heavy bag. Too far. Tried to halve journey with a bus up the road. None came. Tried hitching - musto jacket and big smile. No-one stopped, despite Titchmarsh restaurant open practically 24-7 for OAP carvery brigade and frequent cars down the lane, some giving me a cheery wave! For a visit, it was fine to walk a bit but keeping a boat there? Not til they sort out some kind of scheme...even just encouraging car-sharing.

There used to be a footpath from the old lifeboat hard, right next to Titchmarsh, which came out in Mill Lane. A much shorter route and pleasant walk.
The last time I tried it, I found it had been fenced off near the caravan site and had to walk all the way back.
Another bit of public access lost forever:(

Hahaha! We did the same thing this summer... followed the directions on our Iphone which showed a route..... Ended up having to climb over some old dears back wall and exiting through her garden.... (With her consent I might add....) after a long divert and wander.....

Stick to the the Road!

That has been closed off by the caravan site owners for some years. As you say it was a much shorter route, however still not one to use every weekend to go to & from your boat.

Its a £5 taxi ride to the station, and I agree, too far to walk with a case. I sort of like the idea of being able to go to the boat, move her on, and then catch public transport home. Or go to the boat, and then her indoors can drive down for a day sail with me and take me home again.
