I thunk it's six of one half a dozen etc Btwn shotley and syh.... The lock adds a bit of restraint ... As it closed for a month in winter.... But otoh it also add security and it is totally 100% sheltered.... The drive from the a14 is no big deal... An opportunity to stop at
A shop and get some beer.... Titchmarsh is nice... But I wouldn't want to live there... For immediate access to 24/7 sailing it has to be shotley or syh... And Shirley has more pubs I am lead to believe! Oh, and proper baths!
Shotley lock only closes for maintenance for 10 days, usually in early Feb, close monday through following weekend, open on Friday. Otherwise operates 24/7 for 355 days a year.

Yes, we've been on the waiting list for 8 years! - well, we forgot to take ourselves off it when we moved elsewhere - and we've just got that yea or nay letter.

Got my letter , but they have irritated me so much over the years I am in two minds about returning it.

Assuming they had 20 berths spare all year ( I heard 30) lets say an average of £3k income each berth thats £60k they have lost because they didn't service their waiting list.

Hum supect I'd be sacked if I lost my employers £60k.

Chill man

Yes you are right I must Chill, was mugged by NHS folk in Ipswich monday for a free health check and that's what they said, only more along the lines of loose weight, I knew that, don't drink, gave that up years ago, and go to the Gym. Not a chance!!! Oh and go to Drs re blood pressure in next two weeks, it's strange because when I take it at home its ok ish but the second some medical person comes near me it goes through the roof.

So I am tearing up the SYH letter and therefore relinquish my place on waiting list for ever, that will help me chill. And I won't comment on SYH any more on the forum.

Now to try to chill out whilst I wait for BT Openreach to come to my house this morning after having missed a morning appointmemt yesterday because they did not have the resources available, and apparantly no one available to even bother to tell me they were not comming. I was so bored waiting I resorted to Gardening!!!

In the current climate that figure of 20 could grow. I know they have been sending out letters to people on their waiting list (did you get one? ;) ).

Apparently, some marina's are struggling to sell some of the smaller berths.
i.e. under 30'. Could be an opportunity for a barter.

I suppose they offer less accommodation if you don't sail much. Interesting that many of our marina's are probably still geared for when 30' was quite a big boat. Hence the availability.

I read somewhere that fingers need to be no less than 75% length of the boat. Whether there is a minimum gap to get out , perhaps a length and a half, might still be an extra opportunity for a discount.

I have always found SYH's pontoons short, not always in great repair (I went through a plank once) and those damned hoops. For the "best marina in the south-east" or whatever it is they trumpet themselves to be, they needs some investment for sailors not fancy buildings for their staff.

I'm not an apologist for SYH  but I believe the old planking is being replaced in the original harbour with new hardwood (the new West Harbour is all new stuff).

All the toilet/shower blocks have been upgraded & are as good as most places I would have thought.

I agree about the hoops - I don't know why they went with them. All the metalwork for the pontoons is fabricated onsite in a dedicated workshop so I suppose it was cheaper for them to make the hoops as well.

I might be wrong, but I think some of the hoops are being replaced by standard cleats.

BTW - I really like the new building & I rather look at that than a load of old nissen huts or dilapidated outbuildings. They are leasing out 3 units within the block to outside marine businesses so they will re-coup some outlay there.

I don't get this seeming lack of investment for yachties.

What more investment should they do?

Already on site we have a Sailmaker, Rigger, Stainless fabricator/welder, marine engineers, electronics, sailing school, disabled sailing, workshops with spraying facilities, 60 ton travel lift, new 16 ton scissor lift, Fuel dock, lightship with bar & restaurant (for members & visiting yachtsmen), B-B-Q area, ample parking (not in mud), loads of yacht storage etc.

Mooring hoops aside, the only thing that bugs me at present is that their wi-fi is poor.

I'm sure SYH are open to your suggestions - email them :)

Ha. The marinas are still quoting a minimum charge of 8m. Hardly fair, is it?

But since when have mooring charges ever been fair? Charging more for longer boats isn't fair either. I just don't get this whole 'charge by the metre' thing. You pay the same in a car park whether you park a Mini or a Bentley. Charging by the metre is just an anachronistic attempt to get 'wealthier' clients to pay more. I'd love to see a marina charge a fee for a berth. Full stop.

Email discussions with SYH over the years have been variable to say the least. When the new building was going up they didn't seem to get them.

Relaible electricity on the pontoons would have been nice too. As would water, and diesel (without water for preference). The acres of dusty hardstand means that come fitting out you get covered with dirt.

I use them now and then, but prefer to go down to the boat from RHYC rather have the SYH chaos. ts a bit of shame really the position is good but attitude/ability of some/most staff is poor.

I froze up last winter thanks to their inability to provide reliable power.

I agree with you about the dust - I don't know what the answer is to that other than tarmaccing everywhere.
I didn't have any problems with leccy last year in the West Harbour (I remember that you did in the other part). They've put a new monitoring system in for the leccy maybe that will make a difference.

Maybe I'm easy to please but I don't have the negative vibes of many others here about SYH.

Ooh look, my 1000th post in just under 9 years - every one of them quality too :D

Marinas

Why has no one mentioned Ipswich? Haven Marina is nearest to the railway station, has good showers and toilets, near to resturants and pubs. All round good place to be.
