Things I\'ve never done while sailing

My AIS hobby horse post got me to thinking about calling up ships. I've never done that. My VHF is used sometimes for a call to a harbour control, CG or marina but I've never needed to call a ship. I'm not very sociable.

I've never dried out on a scrubbing grid either.

Crikey there must be loads of things that I'm missing out on.
So what seaman like thing is missing from your log books guys?

I've never followed a contour in fog using the echosounder, although I have followed the 0m contour using the keel /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I've followed a countour line into Plymouth harbour and called up a container ship to ask them to stop and give me diesel - but I've never tied up to piles under sail or changed an impeller.

Of course, I've never hoisted a cone whilst motoring either.

I've never applied tallow to the dimple at the base of my lead line weight to bring up samples of the bottom (that sounds disgusting, I know)...

...nor have I ever used one of those BBQ thingies you see advertised in YM from time to time to clip on the after rail (what some call a pushpit). /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I've never rafted up and really feel that I'm missing out...

... on being able to take part in all the rafting etiquette threads.

Re: Things I\'ve never done while sailing

I've never used the VHF! (not to transmit; I've listened to the odd weather forecast)

I've never used, let alone owned, an outboard motor.

I've never used an electronic autopilot.

I've never owned or used an electric bilge pump.

I've never used any of the following volumes, (all in the chart table book case) in earnest:

The Ship Captain's Medical Guide

The International Code of Signals

The Mariner's Handbook

I have, however, put tallow in the dimple at the bottom of the lead...

Re: Things I\'ve never done while sailing

HI !
I've called up about four ships mid-ocean and found them extremely friendly. Seemed to me the watch-keepers were only too pleased to chat to someone different. Exchanged what ports we'd come from/were going to, and other general things like what cargo they were carrying, when they/we'd arrive etc. Very pleasant to both party's it seemed.

Must admit to being very nervous the first time as I wasn't sure what response I'd get, but needn't have worried.

I've never followed a depth contour line though, except as someone has said, with my keel!

Sound on childbirth, sound on the causes of childbirth...

the current edition has line drawings, which are less, er, graphic, than the photos in the old edition, but even so, its enough to make the seaman think very carefully about what equipment to take on a good run ashore!

Re: Things I\'ve never done while sailing

Hey Tom:
>I'm not very sociable.

Now that's not true and you know it!

I've never sailed on Peppermint (waiting for an invite).
I've never sailed round Anglesea, but maybe this summer.
I've never had to drag a drogue in a blow and hope not to.
I've never set the storm jib for real, except in practice.
I've never raced around Ireland, and I won't.
I've never sailed on Maiden and I would (waiting for an invite).
I've never been rescued by RNLI or anyone else.
I've never paid anyone else to fix my boats.
I've never clawed off a lee shore, except in a racing dingy.
I've never had to use the kedge, and the bloody yoke takes up space and weight.

But I have had many pints of fun on board!

I've never come back from a trip on my own or other's boat without having learned something new.

I've never been out in my own boat without finding something else that needs fixing.

Re: I\'ve done the keel thing

On this subject, I have a Navman plotter which takes a NMEA feed from my B&G stuff, and displays the depth below transducer on the plotter. The plotter also provides tidal diagrams. Wouldn't it be nice if the plotter calculated the reduction to soundings? Still who needs it with GPS? Unnecessary feature I guess.
