Friends in Bruces report that they are now charging €70 in Faro. Mine is paid till June so will update when I do mine as well.

Mine's due in June. Are you trying to pay for 12 months or, the 2 euro for 6 months visitor rate? Let us know when you find out.

Just the visitor rate - they understood that I think, with considerable help from google translate, and were quite apologetic, but I think they are just putting off giving me the bad news. Tbh. 70 sounds slightly less silly than 2 - though somewhere in the middle would be best. More tomorrow. Probably.

Glad to see there is only €2.50 increase for coastal, paid €11.50 the last few years. Originally, there was a language misunderstanding when we decided to pay annual rather than 6 monthly. When asked category, I just replied we sail in coastal area. She understood this to mean boat was "coastal" classification and I didn't feel inclined to correct her:)

Last year in June I paid the "farolagem y balizagem" in Olhao and was charged €11.50 without any questions as to category.

It now appears that there is a new 'price list' (as published in the Diario) and some of us will now be classed as a 'foreign vessel', in which case it is €70

I am in Portimao city a stone's throw from the Capitania - I will go in and check.

Suggest you do same as us and don't ask, just hand over the expired receipt from previous year and say nothing.

That's ok provided that you are Portuguese registered otherwise it appeara to be €70 for all.

There hasn't been an increase since 2002 despite the fact that there is supposed to be an annual review.
The socialist chancellor has got the bit between his teeth so €70 this year. There will be elections this year but we may face annual increases.

Whatever, as this kicked of in Lagos, I would advise a €2 return train ticket to Portiamao or even a €5 to Olhao could prove a good investment. :encouragement:

Realist - as Graham knows, in the past some folk in Lagos were experts at asking the wrong question, in the wrong place at the wrong time and waking sleeping dogs.

Fortunately, most of these folks have departed but their legacies can live on.

emandvee44, I will be very interested to read the outcome of your visit to Portimao's Capitania.

From past experience, Portiamao take a more pragmatic approach.

If you are over 60, then all you need is ID at the Railway Station and the discount is automatic. Sadly I've to wait another 8 years, but I tend to sail there anyway, it's only a couple of hours away from Vilamoura.

The irony is with modern technology, reliance on lighthouses is becoming less and less and even more curious, coastal vessels, who will make most use of the lights pay less than the ocean goers, who use of lights is far less.

The fee is not only for lights but also for buoyage. I suspect that for many people the buoys are more important than the lights but the entrance to a channel can be a bit tricky too although I agree that lighthouses are less important than they used to be.
