I was publicity officer for the festival branch of the Samaritans many years ago. My budget was limited to the extreme, and while I learnt a lot about publishing and ppublicity processes, including a lot of technical terms for printing things, every single penny that came in had not a single overhead. Everything was voluntary.

Re: Happy?

Lynda, I was grumpy beofre i got my boat and turned happy, well sort of until I had all the teething problems, but these are getting sorted out now.

I just don't like people hiding behind good causes, there are many, many people who do things for nothing, and the odd few who live well off the workers hard work. I have had some bad experiences with these type of things, with many millions £'s being ripped off by people hiding behind the charitable name. They are very clever at exploiting your concience and make you feel bad if you do not contribute. Unfortunately the laws of this country lay down the rules for charities, so as long as you are within the rules you are OK.

I realise that there is a need for charity, just a shame that in some cases it turns into a massive marketing company, with fat salaries for management, that then feeds a huge white elephant that gobbles up 92% of what is raised.

These are only my views and I take my hat off to the hard work done every minute of the day by volunteers, these are the true hero's who deserve any holiday type benefit that comes from the activities used to raise awareness.

I spent 12 years in Africa where my family ran a hospital, being the only Doctor for hundreds of miles around, doing life saving operations with limited equipment and educating the people in health awareness, unfortuantely one member has since died of skin cancer contracted whilst working out there, and another of a different type of cancer. I have been involved personaly in on the ground care in hospices and help for others, but I refuse to feed the money making white elephants.
