Planning on visiting the Old Bar just to the west of findhorn

any tips about where to anchor - I want to go aground for a while and take a walk across the sand

D

Our club was going to do an overnight cruise in company there, but never did (yet)

Contact the Nairn Sailing club, Some of them have been there many times I believe. (are there any NSC members on this forum?)

I thought the whole point was once over the bar you still float at low tide (though you can't get out)

Another place we did visit is the old McDermot yard between Nairn and Fort George. Again access only at high tide via a tortuous winding route, and take no notice of the chart. I can probably find and email to you some waypoints to find your way in, but no guarantee the channel has not moved since last year. Again once in you remain afloat.

Further in, a must visit place for you is Munlochy bay.

Best anchorage is adjacent to the sandy bay on the north side about 1/4 mile from the start of the dunes....you can dry out in the bay but its very shallow and only accessible near the top of the tide so if you take the ground you will likely be stuck there for some time..but its a lovely spot..in the right weather.!!

Speaking of which...don't attempt to get in if there is any heavy swell running ..the entrances are not marked ..or they weren't last year.!
Best to pick a calm couple of days and enter no earlier than an hour before high water...once you are in there is ample deepish water at the east end

Enjoy..:)

Findhorn is a wonderful place, the sort of place I know you will love parking her and waiting for the water to go out and watch the wildlife. A couple of great pubs in the village.

I thought you weren't exploring this part of the coast just yet, are you not just on your way to the top bit?

Yes wet and windy today. a day to be indoors.

the weather dicatates what happens

we have one iffy sailor on board so five hours sailing in ideal conditions is about the limit for the crew

so that is a bit limiting

until she heads back south - then we can do some longer days.

all plans subject to change

dunno how I am going to make sense of this lot in the vids/DVds = the boat will change from harbour to harbour

Another useful site for people round here is live weather from Inverness airport http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/EGPE.html

That US site is the only one that gives the weather for tha last 24 hours. Other sites only give the weather now and nothng else.

Of course what it's doing at the airport doesn't always mean that's what it's doing in the Firth. It can be blowing the other way at Fortrose, and calm in the middle.

OLD BAR ENTRANCE COORDINATES 12 AUG 2012
Initial Fix OB1 N57 38.724 W003 45.668
OB2 .690 .659
Intermediate Fix OB3 .646 .611
OB4 .635 .437
OB5 .626 .202
OB6 .647 W003 44.816
` OB7 .671 .425
OB8 .704 .249
Final Fix OB9 .760 .084
Whether or not the fixes are exactly as plotted on the photograph, there is plenty of water if the route above is followed.
Notwithstanding that the virtual buoys are depicted as red cans, they should be treated as mid channel marks (red and
white).
