the boat that got hit with the ugly stick

Riva are (were) lovely boats, and go like a dream with no fuss, just performance. It's just............having to keep polishing to remove all those envious fingerprints they get covered in!

Re: URe: Ugly boats

There is NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING, to compare with a Nelson. It's a boater's boat, no question.

It's got form, lines, grace, power, style, performance.

Unfortunately, for me an impossible dream.

Cliveshep...

glade someone here has a similar taste to me... I think we are in the minority though... But what do you think of my long term plan... although I should explain my boating life has been 30 years sailing... 9 years mobo's.... it does something strange to the head..

My realistic dream boats..(in other words ones in my lifetime I might find (or steel) the funds to be able to purchase..), in order that they might arrive at Hythe Marina! Antares 760 (hopefully later this year... or early next), then perhaps a Corvette 320 (but not as keen on them as I once was...) or Halmatic / Seward 34, then a Nelson 42 MkII..(but probably be in my 80's by then... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ). then if my numbers came up on the euromillions... a Nordhavn 62 or Flemming 65 !!!!

....but as I always say, each to there own. Probably 85% of mobo owners would find this list the last boats they would ever want to own or be seen in...!!!!! but some ex sailors may understand the choices..... but may find I get a sharp knock on the head next week and go and buy a sealine... who knows! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Same wavelength for speed and grace, Halmatic 51, Nelson 42, going down.......... Mitchell, or how about a restored Vospers ASR to get the juices flowing, assuming anyone could afford to run such a beast.

Mind you, also a big turn on, side trawlers, netters etc. but just not practical for family cruising.

your madder than me... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

In your more lucid moments you mentioned Halmatic 51... an even bigger type of Nelson IMO... lovely

Dale Nelson 38.... then you never have to listen to the weather forecast!

mmm, where have I seen this boat before...? Obviously looks great / identical to classic Nelson... but looking at their website they rave about how good fit a finish is.. superb designs IMO, nothing comes close.

Why don't mobo's look "boaty" any more? Maybe it's me but they have no grace, no curves, no beauty, the bow is often lower than the stern, there is too much glass, too much top hamper generally. I realise that speed dictates underwater profiles but somehow designers seem to have lost the plot topsides!

Ok Cliveshep, if I've read you right, I think you might just like what I consider to be a dream boat...

... this is what I'm hoping our business will afford me at some stage... sometimes seems a long way off, but surely worth the wait!.

Yep! that's a proper Mobo, and a proper sea boat as well, most of what I see on this forum, looks like it's been designed by a white goods manufacturer! Probably ok for poncing about in a flat calm, or posing in a marina, but sea boats they are not.

Thanks Kawasaki..... after first of all being told I'm a bit slow for re-posting the bloody awful Carver pic, nice to get a compliment!

The thing is I have had a love affair with Nelson boats forever, but the 42 MkII is just stunning IMO.

That Carver wants carving
Up into plastic boxes for MP's to keep their expences chits in! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Although it is deffo not a 'looker' I quite fancy a Corvette.
If the No.s came in.
Good sea boat apparently, from all reports.
Nice safe side decks, a turn of speed if wanted, with the right lumps.
I reckon, the way they are configured, easy enough to 'single hand' too.

Ah well, I dream on.

Lunch...

Not wishing to rain on the object of your desires Firefly, but can I (just for fun, not fight picking!) give an alternative view on Nelsons? I think folks get seduced by the undoubted beautiful looks and fit out of the best ones, plus the solid engineering and go-anywhere wave bashing abilities. Nelsons get very high marks on all those things and are beautiful boats for sure. But wait a minute - is that all a boat is for? What about the fact a boat should (imho) be a platform for a lunch table with comfortable convivial seating for a party of friends? Is that not even more important? A Nelson gets 0/10 on that score, imho. From the 42 up they're big boats but the deck space is completely squandered. There's just nowhere to have a decent lunch.

If I had the choice between an otherwise beautiful Dale/Nelson, and say a plastic fantastic from Fairline at about the same price with a couple of wonderful outside sitting/dining areas, which would i choose? Well, i could only go to sea in the FL in nice weahter, whereas the Nelson would bash thru storms. So for 60 days of the year Nelson is the better boat. But for 365 days/year I could never ever have a decent lunch party on the Nelson...

What a pity the likes of Nelson dont improve their designs, on the lunch issue.

Re: Lunch...

That was a wonderful post! I haven't laughed so much for ages!! Very many thanks! 10/10 for entertainment value!

Re: Lunch...

Oh er, JFM's braver man than me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif actually do agree with some of what he says, absolutely fabulous boats for wave bashing but a bit hopeless on the on board entertainment front, for 40' + there is hardly any where to sit outside and when you do and happen to be at anchor they roll around like a pig, very uncomfortable. Down the weather not that brilliant either, they have this phenomenal reputation from days of old but actually there are others around these days that perform as good or better.

I am still convinced that a Safehaven 42 configured for leisure use would be a better all round machine (subject to the upperworks being redesigned of course) sea keeping knocks seven shades of poo out of anything I have seen yet but still a modified planning hull.

On the other hand how do you rate or put value your dream boat, if it is your hearts desire nothing else will do, so dream the dream and one day that boat will be yours.
