Scrubbing with the grain doesn't remove the caulk, but the bristles scour along the bond between caulk and wood and tend to separate the two. I don't do any scrubbing except to remove local mud, birdshit etc. Most of the deck keeps pretty clean as the boat does lots of sailing and the combined effects of salt water, sun and the wear from crew's feet keep it clean except in a few corners to which I take a small brush.
