TAMD73p 20k repair??

I'm not, the 73 wasn't a good motor , heard loads of them going this way. I'm forever advising my clients to get the injectors pulled and tested, A £100 nozzle can wreck the engine in 2 minutes.

This is the way most Volvo motors fail due to hosing injectors , takes the piston crown off in seconds.

Do you recommend having the injectors tested on all 10yr plus VP engines Paul ?

If you read the manual that's what it says, to be honest it's down to how honest the pump shop is wether they spin you a yarn that your nozzles are worn, it's usually low opening pressures that cause the hosing spray pattern to be poor and obviously the spring tension alters the timing advancing it which isn't good as you get detonation .

Bit more info . Water in oil and vice versa. Cylinder 6 seized. Am going out next week to try to make sense of it and find a way forward. Have found an alternative route for removing and refitting -need to find a spanish volvo paul! Any one know a good spanish marine engine repairer.

Hi PM sent re Spanish VolvoPaul - he is called Andy

Actually, the Volvo agents here in Sant Carles de la Rapita have got a very good reputation and charge considerably less than Volvo in the U.K. They are old school type engineers and will always try to fix it first if they can. They are an old established family business and it is refreshing to see how well they look after their clients. I personally would highly recommend them and I know many more skippers here think the same. I have even been charged less than was quoted when there turns out to be less work to do or fewer hours. There are a lot of people around Sant Carles who talk a good game but be aware of what they can (or can't) do........
Regards

Scary stuff all this, Paul - I thought £2300 for a new ECU was bad enough! Thanks for your advice the other night, much appreciated.

whats the cost of getting the injectors tested?

I have d12 715 and have been recommended to have the injectors overhauled to prevent this.

A princess in Cala dor with same engines (Rick ) went bang last season due to a faulty injector so seems worthwiles.

2004 boat 500 hrs. Unless told otherwise by vp was intending to do this in November when boat out of commission

I have dealt with many different Spanish Marine repairers over the past fifteen years. They all followed the same trait, that if they found an opprtuniy to overcharge, then they would. Not speaking Spanish is a definite disadvantage. However I have eventually found an outstanding Volvo Penta agent, Oscar's in Torrevieja, run by Oscar himself who is Dutch. He is not inexpensive, but at the same time he is a extremely capable, and like anything in life today you get what you pay for.
I agree with a previous post here advising beware of all the so called experts, there are many about, and if your VP dealer is recommended, as stated on here , I would think twice before moving. I would do as Volvo Paul has said and ask for a breakdown and a detailed estimate.
Oscar told me that VP parts are more expensive in Spain than in U.K. When I said that if I supplied the parts would he fit them, he said he would, but then told me of one of his customers who recently did that and brought original VP parts from a recognised U.K. source, except that when they came to use them they were fake!!
Really sorry to hear of your predicament and trust you get it sorted as painlessly as poss, cheers, Roger

A mate of mine blew up his Sabre 180 mid channel got home on one, the insurance covered the repairs, i.e. lift out, removal, rebuild, refit, and relaunch. Have a word with them you have nothing to lose. Read the policy are you sure there is no mention of "hull, machinery, gear, equipment" there is on ours.

If repairs in Spain are expensive then is it worth shipping engine back to UK to have overhauled ?

I have never yet come across an insurance company covering a repair bill to engine, must have been lucky there or was it one of those engine warranty insurance policy's ?

Regular boat insurace wont cover a mechanical failure ,thats what warranty policies are for.

If the mechanical failure was as caused by the boat hitting something, or possibly caused by a water leak (but all the policies I have seen seem to have a get out around this) then you may be able to claim.

I successfully claimed for a sheared prop shaft on my outdrive as it was suspected that I had hit something causing it to shear

Sorry just had a read of the t&c's on ours, the engine must be under 7 years old professionally fitted, and serviced with docs to prove, and not to exceed 15 knots. We are in breach of all those conditions. My mate must have a bit of "pull" nod nod nudge nudge, you know what I Mean guvnor. LOL

Tallers Cornet the volvo dealer drove and found me to give me a cash refund when the job took less time than they charged me for on my card. Only a small job, but they did seem very honest and fair.
