There has been a news flash over here about a Swedish sailboat (presumably yacht) in distress about 80 miles NE of Aberdeen right now. 11 people on board. Boat is said to have hull damage. Maybe a collision.
Has there been anything in the new about this on your side of the North Sea?

All I heard was she is 60 foot long, has hull damage and is 45 miles off Peterhead - it is a F7 - F8 - they told us her name but got distracted by someone pulling out in front of me so missed that!

There is a boat next to her ready to take the crew should it get worse

She looks like a lovely boat too - what a shame

Was looking at her website

"S/Y Merengue is a beautiful Scandinavian Eagle 64 similar to a Swan built in Sweden."

What a waste!!

There was a report with pictures on the lunchtime Grampian TV news. The 9 crew lifted off are now at Aberdeen airport. In an interview one reported no collision damage, but problems with the hull integrity after 4 days of heavy weather.

This Swedish link has a picture:

http://www.aftonbladet.se/vss/nyheter/story/0,2789,543322,00.html

As said before, 9 people have been lifted off by helicopter. 2 crew are left on board and the yacht is no under way towards land, assisted (but not towed) by a RNLI vessel.

The yacht was on its way to Brighton, but turned north not wanting to beat into the wind.

Goodlink but please translate as I can't read Finnish
But "En helikopter från Aberdeen skötte evakueringen av de nio" I could understand and translate as

"a chopper frae the Granite City (Scotland) evacuated nine"

How am I doing?

You wouldn't have got that far if it was Finnish... it's Swedish!

I think you've got this wrong. Almost all sentences in Swedish translate as "I'm a well-hung plumber, and I've come to sort out your pipework" /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Ah; I should have mentioned that Abba lyrics are a special case. They invariably translate as "I'm the brown-haired one, and I know that you all prefer the blonde".

Bluff your way round Scandinavia

I think it was dear old Frank Muir who claimed that you could sound like a local with only six words:

Toot
Flute
Athlete's Foot
Continental Quilt

(try saying these in slightly sing-song Scandinavian way - then rearrange to suit)

Oh well, you did quite good. But there was only one helicopter and two people stayed on the boat. I thought it would suffice for me to give the essentials, but as you all, perfectly rightly assume that I do not have anything better to do, I will do a complete translation.

Swedes rescued from sailboat

The crew of the Swedish "Merengue" had to be rescued in heavy seas off Scotland.

Aberdeen/Gothenburg.

Nine people have been evacuated from the Swedish sailboat Merengue northeast of Aberdeen wednesday morning, after they encountered hull damage.

There were 11 people on board. A helicopter from Aberdeen rescued nine people. The remaining two stayed on board the yacht which was under way towards shore under it's own power, assisted by a RNLI lifeboat.

When they called for help wednesday morning wind speed was 40 knots (20 m/s) . Merengue is owned by Meregue Charter AB. One of the company's co-owners is Anna Karlsson, who has talked to some of the rescued crew members on the phone.

- The skipper decided that it would be best to have them evacuated. They are in good spirits regarding the circumstances and no one is hurt, Anna Karlsson says to TT (Swedish News Agency)
- Now they are going to eat, get some sleep and have a chat with each other (sic! yes, she says it exactly like this!)

Training trip

Three of the people on board Merengue är ordinary crew. The rest are under training but have duties on board.

- About half of the people had sailing experience, the rest have not been sailing so much. All of them are Swedish, between 20-50 years old and come from different parts of the country.

Merengue is an 60 foot yacht which sails ie in the West Indies.

On Friday they left Orust for Skagen. Their next planned stop was Brighton. The final destination was the West Indies via the Canaries.

But the weather became worrying on their way to Brighton.

Strong winds

- Winds were 40-50 knots right on their nose, so they decided they could not beat into them, says Anna Karlsson.

Merengue instead ended up in Scottish waters.

Wednesday morning the crew called for help using an emergency radio transmitter after discovering that the hull had been damaged for unknown reasons.

The yacht then was about 80 miles NE Aberdeen. There were two offshore support vessels nearby who helped the marine rescue center in Aberdeen to establish contact with the yacht.

A RNLI lifeboat also was launched to assist. From Aberdeen al helicopter was flown in to evacuate nine of the crew.

Merengues voyage was planned to end december 20 after about one month sailing in the West Indies.

Bengt Nordin/TT

(Unforunately no further info is given about this Anna girl....)

And now for the Finnish Translation:

Re: \"I\'m the brown-haired one....

Do you think this yacht outside Aberdeen could have been damaged by your fridge? After all, the location is about right. Check the plotter.
