Re: Aw, come on, Jimi

I've seen Stingo eat lizards fairly fast, so you must have a serious drink problem, what do you take for it? Does Lou suspect?

Me too

If Jimi was reaching (beam or broad - later talk of gybing suggests the latter), the harridan and her dreadful gang were beating and the harridan's argosy was first spotted 100 yards away on the quarter, I cannot imagine why either Jimi or the harridan would have thought a danger of collision had arisen - Jimi would have been well past and clear - yet both obviously did. After all, Jimi mentions that he considered taking action at that stage. So I assumed that the quarter was mentioned because that's where it was when hostilities really hotted up - and so looms large in the visual memory. Hmmm....Well, it's a nice diversion from writing a boring, boring, boring report, anyway. Jimi - I'm still trying to picture the scene when you gave chase. What did the harridan screech to that, I can't help wondering? :)

I think you're suffering from post yachtmaster colregs obsession syndrome. It's common. Just move on. No paint was spilt, let alone blood.

Re: Me too

The harridan's eyesight was distorted by the tears of rage in her eyes, her prey had escaped the previous evening by passing out in the public toilets and she Harpie was angry. No sex the previous night in Yarmouth had given this frustrated example of womanhood a stinking headache and not only could she not see properly but her mind was thinking only in terms of sailors she could ensnare. Jimi had spotted this from a mile off, having had a bit of experience in that department, and was plotting his escape ... ;-)

By Jove, Jimi

You must be quite a hunk if she had such a terrible headache and she was STILL so maddened with lust and desire that she couldn't fobear from chasing you round the compass......Funny kind of seduction, really, but I suppose there's some as likes that kind of thing. Not surprised the lady wife was a little perturbed, though. Sounds as if you had a lucky escape! :)

Re: Aw, come on, Jimi

Hi,

Can't understand why people try to force the rules on each other. There is plenty of room for everybody and unless you are racing, it is very very easy to alter course. As for them getting upset with you and shouting abuse, you should file a report with the coastguard

I was on rescue duty on the Thames once and there was a confrontation between a sailing dinghy and one of the party boats you can hire for events. The wind dropped off and the party boat refused to alter course and promptly hit the sailing boat and sank it. We picked up the two sailors within a couple of minutes and fortunately they had dived clear of the boat prior to the collision so were unhurt. The party boat refused to stop and following a short chase with the aid of the river police it was stopped and the skipper questioned. I was not involved in the court case, but I understand there was a heavy fine.

The reason for the story is that if you can take avoiding action early by a small change of course, do it. Don't just force others out the way when it is unecessary regardless of the whether you have the right to do so. One day you may find the other vessels is unable to comply. Rules are there to help when there is any chance of a misunderstanding, not so that we can force others to take action just because we can.

If you are out there Indigo (I think this is the name of the boat in question, apologies if not), think hard the next time you try this on a larger commercial vessel who may not care for your attitude. You could be the one wishing you hadn't been so arrogant.

Sorry Poggy, Indigo was the name of Twister Ken's boat, just being facetious! Apologies to Ken (and his missus) if she gets beaten up by wee Jimi's!

Re: Half a boatlength?

You blighter, you could have hollered us. Moored at green 13 while at lunch on Saturday. We've got to sort out some way for us all to recognise each other. As you're coming to the Solent meet in May, you'll have to purchase a Mobo burgee which is very distinctive ;)

Re: Saddened by the responses

Jimi, you have my sympathies. Please don't run away to the West Country, do us all a favour and follow this incident up with the police. I am not a family man but think I would be enraged if anti social behaviour caused fear and tears in a young daughter.

You can console yourself with the thought you were dealing with a 3rd rate racing crew. Part of the challenge of Solent round the cans racing is spotting the dozy cruisers and avoiding early, getting into a prolonged shouting match with a non contestant clearly means the race crew lost focus.

You might find that dealing with boat rage is on the annual agenda of local marine Police, it is certainly on the national political agenda. Alternatively follow up with the yacht club hosting the race event. Older wiser heads on the race committee might be annoyed with the behaviour, perhaps the club has a catch all race rule about bringing the club into disrepute and is entitled to protest the yacht out of the race.

As to tedious collision reg debates, 5 meters is a large gap to any Solent race helm.

Re: Half a boatlength?

Brendan

We moored 3pm green 12 Saturday and stayed overnight. Does that qualify as a near-miss, and to whom should we report it?

Sorry to have missed you
Tom
