Thought that would get your attention
What is the best/easiest way to remove adhesive lettering stuck onto transom. If there anything like removing Windermere registration numbers it will be a nightmare. Cos them things dont come off for life it seems!

acetone will takem off. Try a small bit first, direcvtly on the letters, and this wil also clean the adhesive - get under the letters with a razor blade - the one-sided blades sharper and finer than stanley blades from model shops

Hi Ian,if you've got shore power available try a heat gun.starting on a low power setting. It melts the adhesive behind the lettering and they normally come off easily after a short while.

Agree with the stanley paint blade, but the glue can stick like sh*t to a blanket.
Try "Bug Remover" from Halfords - it worked when I removed all markings from my Sunfury (about 5 full length stripes and all decals and names)

I removed lettering on my boat using a hair dryer to soften up the vinyl then slide the previously mentioned stanley/model blade underneath.

Leaves a gluey mess underneath but that came off pretty easily with petrol.

I have got this problem for two reasons:

1) Like most people my Windermere reference number is stuck on a black vinyl backing sheet which is stuck on th hull. Would like to take it off. Tried to peel it off last weekend but it just kept tearing, I can see it being a messy job.

2) SWMBO does not like the current font of the boat name so wants to change it.

Interested to see how others do it

Martyn

dealing with complaints about the font

I use the "Look, shut up, I am not going to change it now because it wil take ages and cost a fortune for no good reason" method to address this problem. It works with all aspects of interior and exterior decor. Just choose everything yourself unles they happen to be there at the time. if they aren't present, make the choise yourself and that's that, too late now. Otherwise there'll be a blimmin discussion, then another discussion, then their choice will be awful and so on and so on. Much better not to involve them at all. After a few years the rest of the family become accustomed to the fact that they have as much influence on these matters as they do upon the lousy quality of service in shops and restaurants, the nasty decor of a hotel room, or upon the dreadful weather - whatever their opinion might be, complaining or discussion won't make change things or make them better. Especially in the Lake District.

Re: dealing with complaints about the font

Its the fact that I chose the original font that caused the problem in the first place, and to be honest she is right i(but don't tell her I said so). She thinks it should be smarter "for the Med" and considering the amount I am spending on equipment for next year it is difficult to argue.

Other than that I wear ther trousers in our house (and I have my wifes permission to say that!)

Use the replacement "in accordance with her wishes" as an excuse to get some great graphics to jaz up the boat and let her pay for them!

Re: dealing with complaints about the font

Considering I'm the creative one in our relationship, I'm fortunate enough to say "Just trust me on this." It seems to work. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif It's the smaller items I tend to leave SWMBO to look after.

Thanks to everyone for there input. I will give some or all of your suggestions a go next week when I return from my weekend in Barcelona.
Just thought I would drop that in to P*** you all off. Allthough I am sure the weather here will be equally sunny. NOT

A hair dryer is best, think a heat gun could damage the GRP.

I took some old, probably 10 years, windermere registration numbers off without a problem, not sure if they have changed or just age made them come off really easily.

Now I'm getting worried I do not want a saggy mess. Best just try picking at it until fingers bleed.
