Watching the track on http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:384982/zoom:10

Why did they tack out quite so far before heading up the channel?

Also notice the boat is registered in Cayman Is, any particular reason not registered in the UK or even Volvo's home country?

There is no legitimate reason for anything to be registered in the Cayman Islands apart from a business that is properly trading there. It will be to do with avoiding tax.

That seems a bit shocking for the BBC to be involved with tax avoiding schemes

Lots of superyachts registered in the caymans.

It's not as though the Beeb are doing anything more than charter the boat for 2 weeks. Hardly tax adoidance.

Their routing does seem a bit odd - I can understand why they went wide at start point as they had tide against them and the optimal route would have meant being within 200m of the point which without anyone with local knowledge onboard would have been dodgy in the dark. But why on earth they are currently in the solent with the tide against them the whole way through makes no sense whatsoever?

Hopefully they're through the worst of the weather. Looks like some gentle tacking required to make North Foreland but once around the corner should be an easy sail all the way up the East coast. It's even looking half reasonable around the top and back down to their starting point.
