I have taken a winter pontoon berth in Southsea Marina and all my charts, almanac etc are on board. I have to be off the swinging mooring by this weekend and early indications are that the weather will be OK for the Poole - Southsea passage.

I'd like to know any and all advice such as:
High Tides on Sunday.
Best Approach from the Western Solent
Anything I should be worried about.

I have never been there before.

Thanks in advance
John

HW Sunday 12:50 GMT 4.6m range 3.5m (NB clocks go back Saturday night!), so you'll have fav tides up to about noon.

Stay due east on N50 deg 46' past Gillkicker should take you clear of Pompey and through the submerged barrier. NB- stay close to the dolphin through the gap as I believe the green post was clobbered recently and still has it's underwater section intact.

Stay due E to clear the Roway wreck (Isolated danger mark) 1 cable then angle in towards langstone channel marker (RW post) and North up into Langstone. Hang a left.

Bon voyage

Hi
HW Portsmouth is 10.20 GMT remember BST ends early Sunday morning.

I will have a look at the tides etc. in the Solent and will post again. Not sure what craft you have are tides a problem?
I have been into Southsea only once. The entrance channel is very close to the entrance to the harbour and is not easily found first time. The channel is tortuous and very shallow. Also there is a restriction on entry to the marina owing to depth of water over the cill. Possibly /- 3 hours high water.

Sorry wrong date HW Portsmouth 13.10 GMT by my tide program.

I like a speedy free ride but tides are no more important than that, I shall probably spend Saturday night in Yarmouth, the boat is 47 foot, 23 ton ex. lifeboat, cruising 7 kts.

Part of my question was should I go through the barrier? I've seen it and I know more or less where it is, but I've never been East of Portsmouth except heading out up channel.

If you leave Yarmouth no later than 10:00 you'll have tide with you in the W Solent, it's not so big an issue once past Cowes. Nice Watson class lifeboat lives in Yarmouth.

The submerged barrier is the shortest route and easy to spot from about 2-3M. Just keep an eye on your lat by GPS once you reach Gillkicker (the Western lump of Portsmouth Harbour) and you'll find it at about W001 deg 04', keeping due East the whole way.

Lovely shot with the 2 Watsons! Can't remember the owners name (Martin - thanks Rob), but he takes people out on fishing trips and also does a bit of part time water taxi.

(Forgot to mention that you leave the dolphin close to stbd when coming East through the barrier).

Went through there today. The missing post (North of Dolphin) is marked with a fender! As Tom said keep closeish to the dolphin and you'll have no problems. Certainly with the tide you'll need for Southsea anyway.

Thanks very much for that, I tried the listed in photobucket where the album is but it didn't work. I will go and look at help, it will be a "first" to find a HELP that actually HELPS.

BTW of all the "helps" that don't help Symantec are my absolute top of the shit parade.

Biggest things .....

a) DO NOT cut short to the entrnace to Langstone .... stay well out till fairway buoy and then turn in ..... the sand-spits are not funny when tides running etc.
b) Beware of the sub barrier out from Southsea beach and keep - unless you know inshore gateway - oustide the barrier / fort.
c) Note that SM has an auto lock sill that only allows you in / out when sufficient water is there to activate the sill.

I like the marina and if I had to change from present SM would be high on my list.

Good luck.

We are from the Posh end of the solent, southsea being our home port. Great staff, quiet location, nice and calm when its blowing a storm outside, newly refurbished bar and marina staff who seem to understand that you are the customer and having paid out money are expecting something in return. The approach can be interesting, so best tackled in daylight. +or - 3hours gets you over the cill but the tide can be quite strong in the marina approach channel. The link will give you most information, if not call Glyn, the marina manager and he can answer any other questions.

Have a safe journey

Thanks all for the kind advice, all is notated and ready for Saturday and Sunday. Weatherweb have increased their Friday prediction a bit, and as they always seem to be on the hopeful side I hope their Saturday F3 comes to pass. Once I'm in the Solent I'll take what comes on Sunday.

....and before anyone says, "but she's a lifeboat", trust me you need to be in one with the wind abeam in a F 4/5 to understand why, though she may be safe, it is VERY uncomfortable and not to be attempted through choice.

John,

There are rtwo breaks in th ebarrier, one midway at the Dolphin, to which Tome is referring which is as close to dead easy as anything gets. There is also a passage at the Southsea beach end which I've never tried and which is for locals and adventurers.

OK ..... the inshore gateway is marked on chart and easily visible if weather is ok ..... but the posts marking the barrier blocks either side can be lost in mist etc.

I regularly use it - and my way is to head to Southsea pier end - keeping a reasonable dist off ...... run parrellel to shore and keep eye out for the two posts .... that mark the passage. There is I believe another passage further out - but I have never used it.

But in reality - you will have to cut back out again offshore to keep away from the sand-spits before Langstione entrance so going inshore or outside of barrier is 6 of one and half dozen of other .....
