I can't seem to find out anything about this except I'm sure I remember hearing about a secondhand boatshow going on at the same time at the main Southampton Boat Show. Is there such a thing? If so where? And what chance of there being some smaller boats there - we're thinking of moving up from a 21' Corribee to something no more than a few feet longer and the chance to browse round some of the possibilities would be welcome.

Cheers
Patrick

I have been to the one at Lymington Yacht Haven several times. One year we called there first but because there were so many boats that I could afford ie not new and the brokers just handed us bunches of keys, we had a great time and never made the real boat show.

I didn't buy any but did seriously consider one or two. The advantage with the secondhand shows is that they are less crowded and you can have a really good look.

Watch prices?

I did a tour a couple of years ago - the largest I visited was Moody's at Bursledon. No shortage of smaller yachts, though the decent ones mostly seemed to have been sold by the time we arrived.

Prices seemed quite high generally - I did wonder if yachts get marked up a bit for the show.

Re: Watch prices?

I sold my Moody336 at the Moody show in 2000. The Moody brokerage suggested a price that they thought the boat would sell at but each owner sets his own price, the same way the preparation is left to the owner but again advice is given by the brokerage. The good boats came under offer fairly quickly but some of the over priced or unprepared boats were unsold. I would sell and buy from a used show simply because of the number of boats / number of people available. If one is serious about buying go as early as possible in the show. Moodys also had a surveyor on hand for people. They were in the business of selling boats and collecting their fee rather than just the entry fee.

There is always hundreds of boats for sale in the Southampton area - all year round. If you want to join the scrum and queue at Moody's during the SBS with everyone else, go ahead. But if you're serious about buying why not turn up a few days before? The same boats will be there, but without the crowds!

Likewise Deacons, Hamble Point, Port Hamble and most other Hamble marinas. Ditto Lymington at Berthons and the YH.

Happy hunting!
