If I may be presumptuous and spring to the defence of me old mate Byron (not my mate at all really but we met here and have come to tolerate each others little ways and he even sold me summink so I guess that qualifies him to be called mate....)/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
I think Byron was actually asking why peeps dont fill in their Profile rather than particularly the Bio bit itself and I have to say I am in agreement with him here. I think twas I that actually asked Kimatollah to improve the Profile fields so that we could see what boat/engine/part of the world. I really do believe this info is valuable when reading and considering replies to posts......after all, bit stoopid to offer advice about massive generators if poster asking for advice on domestic power only has 20 foot trailboat. Frequently, posters fail to give enough information to help others respond appropriately and I fail to see how a profile telling us you have a 24foot hardchine diesel engined fruitbasket in Langstone Harbour compromises you or risks your security in any way............if thats what youve got and youre happy with it thats absolutely fine by me !/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I agree that the 'big boys' tend to dominate things around here but thats only cos the rest of us let 'em. If more folks shouted about their twin engined coracles or jet drive ex tank landing craft we'd all gain a more balanced view of the broad church that represents motor boating in the real world.
I have a Princess 32 of considerable vintage....when I tell some folk this their reaction implies that they therefore view me as some sort of gin palace motor boater with money to pour over weirs but the truth is it cost me less than £15 grand (well, it was actually a pressie from swbmtb) and Ive been having lots of fun doing it up and begging all sorts of help and bits and pieces from like minded folk who get as much fun out of this side of things as actually driving the beast.

Im quite tolerant of raggies whilst were at it cos my first three boats were small sailing cruisers - the first an 18 '6" Caprice called Doral that had been transatlantic before landing up in my tender care and giving me hours of pleasure around the Solent (in somewhat less crowded times than now!)

So, my wish is that folks would fill in their profiles with at least enough info to let us see where they fit in to boatings rich tapestry and if any of you flash buggers out there try and take the piss out of em for being 'simple sailors' I'll be the first to stick up for the 'little man' and Im sure there's many others out there who'll be happy to hold my coat.........

Re: Does it matter?

I suppose this site is more to do with 30ft plus boats. Maybe you should emigrate to PBO Barry!

That's grossly unfair Haydn. This forum is for all of us stinkies whether they have a Dory or a Super Yacht. Money doesn't come into it as in the final analysis we are boaters.
As a matter of interest super duper boats do not impress me because I know that the majority of them are strapped up to the elbows and as one very large dealer told me "many of the owners are all Kippers and Curtains"

Actually Tony you are right, I meant profile rather than Bio rather like yourself there is a certain part of or Bio which I feel is best left unsaid /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'm with you and Byron on this one - I do look at peoples profiles and am disappointed to find that some posters are listed as “User” with 150+ posts but that’s all. I don’t fill in any more than I am comfortable telling people about me or my boat and that’s a choice we all have but I can’t see the problem letting others know the basic boat details. As for the “I’m better than you” types I find that I normally only need to read what's in the occupation field to spot the self important. Take mine for instance, it says Designer, I could jazz it up much more but that's not the impression I want to give of myself.

I must say that I haven't noticed anyone picking on "Little man" since I started using this forum, to be honest if I want to see someone get ridiculed I can go and look for a question on flag etiquette on shufflebot. I think everyone on MBC knows that this would be counterproductive to the longevity of the forum and no I won’t hold your coat coz I’d be mixing it as well.

All IMHO etc

KevL

Sorry Boatone, have to respond to this one ...

"after all, bit stoopid to offer advice about massive generators if poster asking for advice on domestic power only has 20 foot trailboat. "

A lot of us may not be boat owners at the moment, but have in the past (and may be looking for one) and as such do have information that may be of use for people. The fact that I have had various Scandinavian boats, a UK boat and a US Boat with CATS, Volvo's, OMC's and Fords, as well as Outboards, Sterndrives and Shaft Drives (no Jet's or Surface Drives yet...), does mean I have some knowledge on the subjects that I choose to post or reply to. This is of course not taking into consideration that there may actually be somebody out there who actually work with large power and power generation units and associated electrics and electronics as part of their day to day work. I for one, would like to hear from them and would listen to them if the advise was of value to me. Once again I'd say that the true knowledge of a discussion contributor will be apparent in the contribution, not in the profile or bio.

Profiles

1) So many good valid points here but down to individual
2) I stupidly made myself easily identifiable via this website, some loony then e-mailed me with some pretty unnecessary shite ( couldn't trace beyond internet cafe..hotmail a/c disappeared)..obviously NOT a regular contributor though.
3) I do think Boat/Crusing Grounds/Experience should be mandatory , helps us all BUT only if we do not then use to be offensive which some unwittingly are ( and why I deleted the rest of my profile)..so I'm going to alter back
4) I think some are in awe of Byron , hlb, B1, TCM and the other 'experts' but they are NOT the people who have axes to grind, so it must be rest of us cause the concerns.

5) Personally ,as the perfect foil to 'experts' , I have never found anyone disaparaging about my idiocy ...
6) Many regulars obviously know/know of each other. It took me a long time to work that out. Much of what is written is gentle ribbing between 'friends', but may easily be misconstrued.

I would go further to add that there are people on this forum that can add to the forum experience with the non-boating experience they bring to the party. Such as communications, enineering and technology experience that are all relevan to many of the subjects. I have only 3 seasons experience in a small petrol boat, but I am doing my boating in and around the Bristol Channel and south west of wales where we see significant tides and currents so can't compare to someone who has spent all his time on a 50 footer on the thames but would suggest for a minute that I am more or less experienced becasue of the size of my boat or the lenght of time I been boating. One of my neighbours has had a boat a lot longer than me but never goes out in it and never goes out to see so you can't use size or time owned a aboat as a guide. Most of the boats in my Marina never go out at all, usually the biggest ones are those that never leave the marina people just seem to sit on them all weekend and fiddle. End of blather....

I just can't be arsed...

IMHO and knowing the intricacies of the Bristol Channel I would suggest that your 3 years experience there is worth 10 years on the Solent.
As regards boats that never move, this is inherent of all marinas world wide.

Tony,

Anyone who claims Byron as a friend is obviously mixing with the wrong company. I think you need to return to your first love and become a born again raggie!

I know what you mean about the profile and I freely admit that I didn't fill in my boat details for security reasons. She's on a swinging mooring and I don't want to inadvertently make a comment that might be of use to someone with criminal intent. Before I am shot down in flames by all and sundry I know that the regulars on these forums are OK (and I have swapped details in PM's with several) , but who know's if lurkers are around. Paranoid? Maybe, but you need to be careful and I don't want my boat trashed.
I didn't fill in "Occupation" because I didn't want to appear snotty or evasive. (Maybe I am, but people can work that out for themselves from my postings!). I couldn't decide what to describe myself as and in the end I gave up

What does surprise me with the profile is how many people don't give at least their first name. I'ld much prefer to address people by their name rather than their handle. It just seems more friendly somehow.

Joe

PS. Just worked out SWBMTB. Very good!

Re: Does it matter?

Depsol is in a sphere all of his own, and gets away with blatant advertising that no one else could because it's a forum thing, and has lots of support from the in crowd ;-)

Do you mind I provide excellent info on the CI and am the resident Guernsey expert thank you. Have helped many a cruiser visiting this area and also many people on the forum. Plus I have a 26 footer and not worried about the boys with their big flybridge cruisers. Have more fun around these waters in a sub 40 foot boat due to tides. blatant advertising huh! ;-)

I am boating again ;-)

Re: yellow card?

ooh dom! Of all the posters, only you manage to mention the name of the products/services that you sell, and argue its merits, as often as possible. Unfortunately, the dreaded unmentionable product had a crap review in MBM lately. Yet blatant advertising is indeed what it is, and I see you moved to PBO to trumpet the stuff there. There are dozens who could use what many of us sell to other posters here, but hardly anyone knows even their industry sector, let alone their products. Nonetheless, attack is the best form of defence, so good on yer!
