What people post is far more informative, and you soon realise who posts and information you can trust. People like yourself tcm, haydn (when he is being serious) etc talk from years of experience and are very forthright, though only talk about larger boats, and your opinions tend to gain more weight because of the ability to post seemingly at any time during the day and night. Others like B1 hide their experience, and rarely get involved in any heavy weight conversations.
There are a number of regular posters who can talk serious engineering problems related to engines, revamping old boats who take part where they think fit.
Depsol is in a sphere all of his own, and gets away with blatant advertising that no one else could because it's a forum thing, and has lots of support from the in crowd ;-)
There are many like me who chip in where they think they can contribute with esoteric knowledge that isn't covered by the mainstream contributors, or when I feel like a good fight with tough skinned guys like tcm
What's sorely missing are people who can or will bring up the issues of the smaller boater, those with boats of less than 30' who trail or use their boats locally, but still have a fantastic time. That has been fulfilled in part by the Wareham lot, but if you notice, they keep it to one or two large threads
Everyone chips in ad hoc, and don't intrude on the general forum activities, which are dominated by a small number of members who kick off most threads, and are most prolific posters.
I recently asked this question in Scuttlebutt, but got very little response. I agree, it doesn't matter, except that if someone voices a strong opinion about this or that boat, this or that cruising ground or a particular marina, it is interesting to see from their bio if they are speaking from individual experience, or whether they simply have an axe to grind and are hiding behind their anonymity. It's an individuals choice of course, but an interesting point that was raised in SB was that those who filled in their bio's only did so if they had something to show off about!!.
good answers, i agree with Byron (theres a suprise) it's easier to work out if people are serious or taking the smeg. also when someone asks a question, in stead of wading in with some half arsed cheapskate answer, like "this is how to mend it yourself with a bit of wire and a clothespeg". only to find out that the lightbulbs fitted to the boat in question is worth more than my house!
so before i answer posts i look at BIO's just in case.
Yeah I think your right but me I post a reply and see what comes next ,
because it's surprising what other replies can do .Quite often I learn very useful bits and bobs which have saved me loads of time and money to.
Don't think class comes into it really, more that the regulars started off small and now have bigger boats, so think in terms of long distance voyages and based in Med etc.
I don't have the experience to comment on many of those threads, so stay out, but do have lots of experience in other largely irrelevant areas. Would love to post more, but usually can't usefully contribute.
Many posters can't compete with the experiences told, often with great humour and experience, by the more ancient (in terms of time served here!) members, so less posts about 3 hours spent burbling out to sea in ancient 4knt wreck, than royal ancients do.
Would like to see more posts about humorous exploits in small boats etc to encourage the lurkers here. I'm sure the potential is there, but I don't have the way with words that tcm and haydn do, and there isn't the same glamour in a story about a weekend pottering around the solent <s>

Good point Brendan and one I for one hadn't considered - not that I could add anything to such a thread simply because my knowledge of such matters is literally 30+ years out of date. Excepting of course tech.spec. on early trailerables.
The trail boat thing was mulled over quiet a while ago, but everyone poo poo'd it. I put up the Trailer legalities thing, ok not stricktly boating I know, but it sooned turned into 'confessions of the naughty motrorist' thread. No harm in that and quiet entertaining really.
The way that it comes across to me. Is that if you haven't got a boat worth X zillions of pounds and don't use it in the med or somewhere hot, your perceived as 'just playing at it'. Right or wrong, I don't know. You've only got to look at the number of boats on trailers to see that quiet a few people indulge in their boating this way. I know of at least six in my neighbourhood. I trail because time is an issue for me with regards work, family etc. I couldn't do half as much boating if I had a mooring somewhere miles from home. In fact we used to keep the boat on a mooring and it would get used once a month, if that, in the summer.
The other thing it boils down to is money. I'd love to be able to afford a 40 odd foot boat, but alas the Rag and Bone industry has been in a decline for some years now due to the green issues of various governments.
I agree that the Trail boater gets.....over looked some what, not only on the forum, but in the mags as well. Well apart from one article that I read a while back where a chap trailed to france with a 14ft orkney, but hat was even treated with a bit of leg pulling on the forum!
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I'm hard done by here. I know of one boater hereabouts that has a trailboat and has travelled further this year than a lot of people with larger boats. I use my boat at every possible oppotunity. Today Its getting used to go and look at a job in the city, beats the traffic and parking.
Did I make any sence with that lot, I've lost myself. Maybe a bit in the Bio could state weather a Trailboater or not. I know a few of my friends have looked at the site and said 'its ok but, its not really for us as it seems to cater for the larger boat owner'. And if you look at it from an lurkers point of view. I can see where they're coming from. I was with trepidation that I took the plunge to post on here knowing that I probably had a boat most would view as a toy!
Guess you need to answer that one yourself first...
My view is that names are not important, contribution and serious replies are.
Bios of experience is "nice to have", but the true knowledge of an individual lies within the replies and other contributions to the forum.
Other than that, I am 6ft 2, broad sholdered, blond, typical Norwegian ....answers to the name ALF (Alien Life Form)
Wish I could find the violins Barry. Never looked at you as being an under dog. Also cant agrea about the Med thingy. Hardly ever hear about a med boat actualy going anywhere or doing anything. Except of course TCM's boat going back to the menders. Anyway like the rest of us, there nearly always here. Working. I've looked at the Med thingy. From where I live it just seems like a load of hassle, less course if you can get away for a month or two. But they still seem to close down for the winter.
At the end of the day, I suppose this site is more to do with 30ft plus boats. Maybe you should emigrate to PBO Barry! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

No one can force me to come here.<font color=red> I'm a volunteer<font color=blue>
Did it come across like that, didn't mean it to. maybe your right about the 30 plus foot thing, i dunno. Loads of people here with <30 foot boats, but just don't say so.
As far as the PBO thing, spit spit, knife in the back, quick get me a BandAid!!
