Soft shackles - uses

I don't have any soft shackles!
I do have a few blocks tied onwith dyneema lashings, and a couple on dyneema loops.
A few things cowhitched to spliced dyneema soft eyes.
And a dinghy jib halyard where a loop goes over a plastic ball. That's probably done better by a soft shackle?

I have used this kind of genoa sheet for a couple of years now. The shackle goes simply through the sheet.

I use soft shackles also as jib hanks with dyneema Solent stay.

What size sheets are you running this set up on? I see that there is a fair amount of whipping either side of here the shackle is run through the sheet. Is this to stop creep? I'm wondering if under load the shackle will try to slip into the core, if the core and sheath are not stitched together?

Appreciate any clarification you can offer.

Actually, I have ordered lengths of dyneema from Premium Ropes in NL without difficulty. And with a reasonable delivery time too.

Just in case, have a look at the web site I posted above, in black they have two different cover braid thicknesses (thin and thick braid cover), and more underlying rope diameters (oh and also costs less).

careful if you want to splice it in the way of the video I posted above, rope entering the cover at about 10-15cm from the cover end, and exiting likewise, the 32yarn cover is more difficult.

The size is 12mm and the type is Gleistein Tasmania. I’m not sure, but probably I added a couple of stitches under the whipping. It was a kind of experiment and I just did what felt good, but it seems to work fine. The hole is as tight as before so there is no stretching visible. The important thing is not to damage any fibers when going through with the soft shackle.

Just had a thought about soft shackles - how any others never even think about looking at the stainless shackles these days if you happen to be in a chandlers? Been a while since even the thought of buying one has appeared.

Need a shackle - make one in the time it takes to drink a coffee
