So who's GPS has failed today then?

Hi, has anybody tried a Raymarine E80 or E120 please? The boat is in Sicily and it would be nice to know whether It works or not before we turn up in mid May!

I've got a an E80 with a Raystar 125. It took a few minutes to acquire the satellites. Check the gps status in the main menu on the plotter. I had to change the chart datum to the UK... For some reason it had reset it to Singapore.
 
Chris, our Raymarine C80 with Raystar 120 fired up and gave an accurate position and date as did the Garmin 555.
 
At about 1pm on Saturday (noon UT) my Raymarine C80 came up with an error message "position fix lost". For the next hour it gave an accurate lat/long but no icon or track on the plotter. It then reverted to normal function. Of course NATO have been playing their games around here recently.
 
Apparently Simrad have now accepted that there is a problem with a number of their plotters including the NSS. I sent a message to Simrad-Yachting this morning explaining my problem. Maybe a few others have done the same and it's galvanised them to recognise there is a problem.

However, the good news is - the old version of the software (2014) works fine! I reloaded it this afternoon and it got a fix straight away. Whatever they did in the January 2019 upgrade was actually a backward step. As an ex software manager I'm not impressed with their QA testing!

My very old Garmin GPS12 is still giving an accurate location and the correct time but thinks it is August 1999 so it has been influenced by the week rollover issue. Although I am not bothered by the date problem, i have discovered a piece of software that will allow you to input a current date so that subsequent date updates from the satellites will work, at least that is what I am led to believe. It is supposed to work on all the older Garmins. However, i need the correct cable to link the Garmin to a PC so have ordered one and will try in a few days. If it works I will report back.

Looks as though Lowrance have the same problem. I applied the patch in February and it resolved the October rollover problem but today it didn't manage to acquire any satellites after 10 minutes. The patch has now disappeared from the Lowrance website. There is a section where they admit there is a problem and you can register to be told when the fix is available. I hope it won't be long - I decided not to replace my log paddle wheel as the speed and distance were available on the GPS!
 
I've already gone through this problem once with a Furuno GP-31, which worked perfectly apart from the date, and Furuno had no upgrades. I now have a Standard Horizon CP300i, so would be interested if anyone knows if these have an issue...

Personally, I think anyone who has bought their GPS or chartplotter in the UK (and probably more widely in Europe) from a retailer, where the manufacturer refuses to provide a firmware update (as was the case with Furuno), and can still prove their purchase has a case against the retailer. Products are supposed to be "fit for purpose", and if the software can't handle a known issue that happens at least every 19.7 years (depending when in the cycle you purchased), it does not matter how long ago you made the purchase, or the state of any warranty. NB though, I'm *not a lawyer*!! (Happy for any lawyers to chip in...)

Chris, do you have the last update from Raymarine installed? I think it was v5.16. Whether this makes a difference or not I don't know, but mine was upgraded about 5 years ago and now works. Another boat owner reports a failure on a C70 without any updates. So might be worth going down armed with a 128mb good quality CF card with the update. Note, you can't use a bigger card until the update is applied, hence the now very small size of the card.

Pete, the boat is new to us but the previous owner was pretty keen on keeping things updated, so hopefully yes but I will take a card to be on the safe side if I can’t get a reply from him.
