so whats WRONG with Bavarias then?

Do you think so?.... I'm not so sure....

As i'm in the market for a new boat, i've been looking at secondhand prices quite closely recently, and thought that the Bavs seem to be at a similar discount secondhand to Ben/Jen as when new....

eg a 2000 Sun Odyssey 411 is about £95k and a 2000 Bav 41 is about £88k.... so not dissimilar to new differences IMHO...

Stay away, it must be a mongrel!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oi - The CI thing was in an Etap summer 2005

[/ QUOTE ]

Getting to the Ci in an Etap is no big deal, we do it regularly. Even in a 28i (28ft).

On the Bavaria issue, firstly, I wouldn't buy one myself, for no real particular reason. However I do think they come in for an unfair amount of stick.

There does seem to be a large degree of prejudice and snobbery about boat ownership. If you don't like a particular boat, then don't buy one! If you HAVE sailed a particular boat AND you have something constructive to say, then fair enough. But to comment on hear say etc, is nothing more than $#it stirring.

I don't think anyone will argue that Bavs or Jan's and Bennys for that matter are built like HR, Malo's, Oysters or Moody's, but its a different TYPE of boat, like as someone already said, comparing a Rover 75 with a Merc. In fact the Rover 75 wasn't a bad car.

To always bring up the issue of the 'keels fall off Baverias' line is becoming a real bore. It was Baveria MATCH boats that had the problem, NOT the cruisers.

Cars are always a good comparison, I owned Citroens for years, I still own 2, just bought a new C4. The crap you hear people talk about Citroens, uninformed crap. In 15 years I never ever had ANY major problems with them, at bit like owning a Baveria I suspect!

its impossible to ignore facts, like the number sold, the number in charter,

More people own a Rover 75 then a Merc C-class: does that make the Rover a better car?

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats wrong way round anyway - more people drive a C class than a Rover and arguably the Rover was a better car. But it was British.........

A better comparison would be between a Citroen, surely the Bav of car makers, and any of the German up market brands. Both will get you to the destination with high reliability. Both will be as roomy. One will definitely be a bit better made and last longer, but not by a lot. One will be half the price of the other and much better value for money but the other will give more price of ownership, which is where much of the emotional difference lies.

I always feel a bit sorry for the Bav owners on here. They've bought what they could afford and what is their pride and joy only to have it knocked by people who either own old manky boats or alternatively are lucky enough to be able to afford something more up market. Bit like walking up top the young kid in his first Clio ( 5 inch exhaust, boomer etc) and saying "thats crap, cant you afford anything better?"

Its amazing how quiet Squirrells has gone!

Has a bit of a dig and runs away!

Obviously hiding his nuts!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Beautiful Victorious

Russel love the new picture of Victorious on your site, she looks stunning with all her cloth up. Have you picked your next project yet?

Re: Beautiful Victorious

She is indeed quite a sight... And awesome to sail
Alas thats not all the cloth.
Jib is much too small.. but the biggest i have got.
new boom, bowsprit and gaff are made and in use, But the new topmast awaits the standing and running rigging.
Then I will need topsail and jibtopsail.
A pair of kiwi props would have much the same effect as taking the handbrake off.
Then a wider coachroof (and total rebuild of the interior) would make her tenable inside.
Then she will be about finished.

Unless there is a cure for the madness that blights me.....currently there are seven boats on the "next project" shortlist.

To briefly return to the topic of the thread, I have thought of something RIGHT with Bavs!
They dont need every square inch painted, varnished etc
One small tin of varnish and one brush wouuld last several years!

"I always feel a bit sorry for the Bav owners on here. They've bought what they could afford "

It's not necessarily that they can't afford a better boat. My friend who is looking for a Bav has a budget that would comfortably buy a secondhand HR, Moody or whatever. He just wants a newer boat so there's less likely to be hassle with maintenance etc.

Don't rise to it my furry friend!
They obviously think that wood is naturally orange and that it is perfectly acceptable to spray polyurethane varnish onto unfinished woodwork.

Go onto a new one, pull the backs of the berth cushions forward and what lies beneath will be revealed. You don't need to be a surveyor to spot an unfinished boat.

You can bolt quality fittings to one, but you can't polish a turd and I wouldn't spend my hard earned cash on one.

This is of course my personal opinion many many people will buy them and be perfectly happy with them. Rather like bicycles and terraced houses.........just not my cup of tea! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Its called sarcasm. Actually, i'm on the planet that has noticed that a substantial percentage of people who post highly condescending posts about Bavarias sail HRs. They are IMHO what have traditionally been referred to as snobs. And at that I stress that I do not point that finger at all HR owners.

The tone of the post with comments like

[/ QUOTE ]is intentionally derisory. A classic British middle class snobbish response, failing to recognise that not everyone has the same requirements of a boat, or funds to own one. And to describe the boat as turd is plain insulting.

Hopefully, you will note that I am writing this as a non Bavaria owner.

No it is not it is a fact, if you don't believe me, I suggest you go and look at one.

Guilty as charged, except, I could have bought a new Bav and considered it very briefly. I would rather entrust my fortune and occasionally life to a used quality yacht than what amounts to an unfinished project built down to a price and designed from the inside out!

To describe it as a boat is exaggerating! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
