COVID 19 - General Update - 10th May
10th May 2020

RE: COVID-19 Update from MDL Marinas

Under guidance, government has announced easing some of its lockdown regulations. This now means :

Stay at home as much as possible
Work from home if you can
Limit contact with other people
Keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)
Wash your hands regularly
Self-isolate if you or anyone in your household has symptoms.
We have social distancing measures in place and look forward to welcoming people coming to perform maintenance and security checks on their boats. And while we understand the reasoning behind the government's decision to ease lock down rules, in the way it has, we share your frustration about not being able to get out onto the water just yet. We are waiting for any leisure boating changes from the port authorities and will keep you updated.

We're so proud of our marina staff who have been taking care of the site, our buildings, our customers' boats, and keeping an eye on our tenants' premises. They’ve been making sure that everything is as it should be for your arrival, including appropriate social distancing signage and safe systems of work. We’re doing everything we can to keep both staff and customers safe, and to make our customers experience the best it can be for the months to come as we all adjust to our ‘new normal’

During lockdown the teams have been busy with a limited amount of commercial lifting and have ensured contractors have been onto our sites for essential maintenance. Under the new guidelines, more of our tenant businesses will be back in their offices with staff working on site. So when you visit, please make sure you adhere to the guidelines above. If you need to make a booking or have any specific questions or want to discuss a boat movement please contact your marina. We ask that you please give us as much notice as you can and we'll try our absolute best to fulfil your request.

Your season pack is now ready to collect from your marina office. In there you will find 2 access cards, tide tables and information about OTIUM (an exciting new rewards package), plus partner offers like discounts on valets, and maintenance. In the meantime you can check out the offers on our website

It’s been a challenging few months for everyone; thank you for all your patience and understanding.

As we keenly follow the results of the restrictions lifting, and ease our way out of lockdown we’ll be making an exciting announcement that underpins all of the reasons for continuing to berth with MDL.

Best wishes

Michael Glanville

Managing Director

I think this means I can now walk the 100m from my house to the marina to de-barnacle my outdrives and refit the props without becoming a social media pariah.

Staying onboard isn’t exactly maintenance, but I can see that if you live far away the two things could be related - it might be worth contacting MDL to get clarification. My guess would be that it would be a nono.

MDL confirmed today maintenance visit / checks ok. Overnight NOT ok...

Previous social media posts by MDL stating no time limits set for maintenance checks all deleted. Now message is clear.

I’m a bit sad, but actually I know it’s the right call.

From Ting Dene Marinas this evening but the Broads Authority covering the Norfolk Broads say paddle boards, canoes and sailing is fine but no powered boats yet while they get more clarification.

FROM TING DENE.
Following the announcements from the Government this week about unlimited outdoor activity with effect from Wednesday 13th May 2020, we would ask you to please follow all guidelines with regard to the safety of you and your family, other marinas users, and our own marina staff team when visiting the marina.
Many measures remain in place and we ask that you adhere to all current guidance please, including maintaining social distancing (a minimum of 2 metres), staying at home as much as possible, and keeping up regular and frequent hand washing. If you have any symptoms of coronavirus or have been in contact with anyone who has please do not visit the marina.
Please may we ask that you do not have any direct contact with the staff team at the marina. For the time being our offices remain manned but locked, and we are available on the phone and email as usual.
Current guidance does not allow for overnight stays on your boat. Please may we ask you to adhere to this guidance.
At the time of writing we are awaiting clarification from the navigation authorities with regard to use of the rivers.
We shall continue to monitor all guidance received. Further updates may follow as applicable.
Thank you for your patience, understanding and cooperation.

Quote from Govt Guidance on what is permissible:

- all forms of water sports practiced on open waterways, including sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, rowing, kayaking, surfing, paddle-boarding and the use of privately-owned motorised craft (in line with the guidance issued by the relevant navigation authority) are allowed. You can continue to use towpaths for walking, running and cycling, being mindful of other users and people living in boats along the water

Broads Authority statement 13 May: Government confirms that private boats can use Broads waterways

The Broads Authority has today received confirmation from Defra that privately owned powered boats can be used on the Broads for day trips as long as other guidance on social distancing is followed. This follows guidance issued earlier this week that allowed sailing and paddle boating (including canoes, kayaks and paddle-boards) to resume.

Whilst other inland waterways face a delay in the return of powered private boats, the Broads is able to welcome boaters back because maintenance of the waterways has continued throughout the COVID-19 lockdown.

Whilst the public are advised to stay at home as much as possible, from today (13 May) you are now able to leave your home and travel to exercise or spend time outdoors from today.

As well as the relaxation of boating restrictions, owners may also visit their boats for leisure or to do maintenance but are not able to stay overnight away from their usual residence (so day trips only).

The Authority urges people to take care to follow guidelines and respect social distancing and to bear in mind that many businesses associated with boating may not yet be able to open.

It is also essential that boaters contact marinas where there vessels are moored directly to see if they are able to access them as some businesses may not be open or able to facilitate safe access.

The revised guidance on returning to work (if you are not able to do so from home) may also mean that some businesses may be able to re-open whilst others cannot.

As well as restrictions business owners will have to judge whether it is safe to re-open and if they can apply social distancing/precautionary measures to protect staff and customers.

Whilst we all pleased that we can access the Broads again, the threat of Coronavirus is still very real. It is up to all of us to ensure the guidelines are followed to help save lives and protect our NHS.
