Small / economic cruiser?

Hi

While I'm a die hard raggie, I've not managed to convert SWMBO over the years so, I'm thinking about getting a small motor cruiser so we can still shoot around the Solent but spending much less time on the water - while I can get my sailing fix with various friends...

I know didly about stinkies so need your advice - ideally the boat I'm looking for is...

1. 20 - 24 feet long
2. Does about 15 - 20 knots (I'm used to going everywhere at 4 knots so speed aint that important!)
3. Will sleep 2 of us in comfort.
4. Has toilet
5. Has small galley
6. Doesn't cost and arm and a leg to run
7. Pref has a diesel engine
8. Costs £15 k - £25 k (2nd hand)
9. Is reliable
10. Not too old - say 2 - 7 years

I'm not looking for Bond boat looks but neither would I want an old man's tug !

You could do a lot worse than considering a Channel Islands 22, very well built and an excellent sea boat. 2 berths, small galley, sea toilet and decent sized cockpit. My old one had a 140 diesel and did about 17kts flat out. A great little boat, thouroughly recommended.

Scrap Heap Chalenge has just finnished with a Fairline Weekender. It's been heavily reinforced and should be going cheap.

There are a few 'Nelson' type small semi-displacement boats on the market which would probably do you nicely - Seaward is a name which springs to mind. Hardy also make good seaworthy small cruisers. A good look through the ads in the mags is the way to go. - Then if you want a completely professional,in depth, and unbiased opinion on any craft ask this forum ??!!!

I think a Hardy would fit the bill exactly, rugged good looks, good seakeeping. Only problem is finding one with a Deisel.
Channel Island 22 whilst a nice boat is more for a keen fisherman.

Whilst Seawards are excellent boats you certainly won't find one for anywhere near the money Roger is looking to pay.

Boats-for-sale has a number of Hardy 25s which sound possible apart from they all date from the 1980s.

I did admire the Hamilton jet drive arrangement they fitted too!

Would love to find this scrap heap and go raiding... the amount of amazing kit available is phenominal.. I suspect all the good bits are planted.. but....

Perhaps we should come up with a MOBO chat team.. any takers?

Yes. I heard some where. It was very rigged. I mean. You just happen to find. A boat and three pontoons. A jet drive and was it three perfectly good outboards in a car scrap yard??

Yes its all completely rigged, one of my colleagues did it this year, the whole site is a stageset in surrey. The supplied experts have worked out what they want in advance and all the bits are planted, the teams only have to find them amongst a few extras to throw them off. My friends team failed to complete their vehicle properly in time, but they got 2 days off before the challenge, when they returned all the problems had been fixed, safety equipment added engines all running perfectly etc.. still all bloody had work though.
