I need to repair a rudder which has split along the bottom of the leading edge. The split is ragged and about 1cm wide by about 15 cm long. I can't close the split so I need to fill it. I was going to use ordinary glassfibre resin + some chopped strand mat cut into small bits. Apparently this resin is not to be used below the waterline. What should I use?

polyester resin underwater

polyester resin comes in two flavours: cheapest is orthophthalic which is the worst for absorbing moisture but it's what you get if you just ask for 'resin'.
the correct stuff for underwater use is isophthalic. iso is about 50% more expensive.

G'day Mick,

You should use an epoxy resin, also don't use chopped strand fibreglass matting, use only material that is designed for use with epoxy resins, this will give you a stronger and lighter finish. Any fillers should be 'closed cell' type, again mixed with epoxy resin.

Hope this helps

yes, but how do you tell?i

i mean i go to the local motor factor shop, plastic padding resin, £5.00 for 500mls. is it isophthallic? or what?
could we have a definitive list of manufacturers and their trade names and contact details?
its the same with sikaflex, plenty of its so and so but never any definitive names and contact details.
i would be quite willing to set up a simple web site and post the info.
not moaning, just being an organiser

Best source for Sikaflex is Marine and Industrial sealants. Tel:01692 538263. They may pop the odd tube in the post but even with the postage charge they are still cheaper than the chandlers and they do the whole range including primers cleaners etc.
