hi , i am looking at fitting a shower into my boat , space is not a problem but not enough for water back boiler solid fuel type ,, ,, considering gas but would prefer electric , problem is my electric supply will be 2k at best , either from rectifier or from 2k generator . is it possible to get a 2k electric shower , does not have to be domestic standard but useable , or should i just go gas , not sure which is more practical and cheapest to run . any ideas anybody would be appreciated.
PS , raw water 1 GM Yanmar so colorifier not poss

Presuably you meant inverter, not rectifier.

You could heat water in a calorifier electrically with your generator .... (or from an inverter if you have a huge battery bank)

of course, (y) ,, as in calorifier do you mean just a water tank ? i have been thinking of this ( as i can make my own ) but it involves a lot more plumbing and instilation work , q poss from 2k i know
 
Heat water in kettle,put in garden spray with pump,add cold to suit,works well saves a lot of bother,can shower in cockpit in the summer and indoors in the winter
(y) but got to consider my wife . not really up to speed with gardens , do you mean a watering can ?
 
I have a instant gas water heater that I use when I don't have a shore power supply or use a calorifier heated by shore power or engine if I have it running.

Cooking is also by gas so installation of gas exists so no issues.

Inside and outside showers feed with hot water as is galley sink and wash basins in the 2 heads.

Requires by SWMBO before she would stay on the boat let alone going sailing.
 
I have gas cooking so basic instilation is there , just think it would be more expensive to use than lecky , ideally to be run from solar when warmer climes are realised ?
 
The advantage of a tank over instant is that you have the option of heating it more slowly - so for example we have 3 ways of heating the water - engine, mains 1.5kw element and the same element powered at 375w by spare solar energy
 
What size boat and are there any budget restrictions.

The neatest way (I think) is a hydronic heater. It will heat the water to a calorifier and provide you with a copious supply (subject to the size of the calorifier of course). I fitted one and very pleased with the results. It runs of the boats diesel so is potentially safer to other fuels. They are very compact but you will need to fit a calorifier.

A 2KW inverter and/or Genset should be enough to heat the water as well when using either of these two sources. Heater coils dont produce any significant start up load and will essentailly draw the power that is avaialble so unlikely to trip the inverter or the Genset, but an inverter will drain the bank very quickly if being asked to produce that amount of power, so isnt very practrical or a sensible way of using DC amps.
 
You could probably run a small calorifier with your engine. The fact that it is raw water cooled does not matter, see my website. 5 litre ex-GPO calorifiers come up occasionally on Ebay, I have one in my motorsailer.

there are budget restrictions, and looking at 6 or 7 galls tank , that is why i am keen on making my own , the genny or slow solar is what i am looking at ,, thank you

all reports say that there is a considerable amount of effort in using the raw water route , 5 ltr is really the minimum, ty

this is interesting ,, is a colorifier really just a water heater tank , like a giant eletric kettle ( :p ) if it is i can easily make my own stainless one .

I have considered fitting a direct solar water heater as Its a lot more efficient the electric solar.

I have a solar water heater for my swimming pool and a lot of low cost housing has solar water heater.

The simplest way would be to run some black plastic pipe around your deck and have a pump to pump the water round the calorifier to heat the water in the calorifier

that would be alright , but it would freeze here !!! do you have experience in making calorifier or water heating tank ?

I made a calorifier some years ago from a galvanized tank the I designed to fit my very small boat I had at the time. I then fitted a copper coil inside from 15 mm copper water fittings and bulkhead connections. Today I would use stainless steel or a plastic tank wrapped in insulation and outside cover.

This was only heated by the engine as no shore power at that time.

No reason to have 2 internal coils one heated by the engine one heated by the external solar heating coil that could have water with antifreeze in as its would be indirect heating so no problem with freezing.

You would need a header tank to keep the antifreeze topped up.

BTW we do get frost and below freezing sometimes where we live in the winter.
