OK I'll try and keep it short...

Bought a 2002 Sealine S28 in March - berthed it in N.Wales -

Despite enjoying an extremely sunny summer we only managed to take all the covers off 4 times. Not to mention only half access to the marina due to the tide. Thats not how it appeared in the brochure...

So we've decided to sell up and buy a slightly bigger Sealine in the Med where the weather is hot and tides stay still.

The question - does anybody know any cheap marinas with good airport access??

Any advice much appreciated.

Awesome deal available on a very nice S28 - view the pictures at

Well we are not in the med, but here in The Algarve (on the Atlantic) we have fab cruising ground. Portiamo marina is doing some good deals at the moment and you are only 30 minutes or so from Faro airport.
PM me if you want further info
Cheers

I haff just what you need......

You are dead right to move to the sun. We did same in 2002 and have not looked back. If you rent a marina berth down there you can get mucked about becuase berths are in such short supply. Therefore, if you can, better to buy imho. I have not looked into finance but I think you can mortgage them and at today's low interest rates the repayments are probably similar to UK marina fees. Howver, you can make a significant gain as these berths tend to increase in value 25-30% each year, and this gain is taxed at only 10% in the UK I reckon. This gain more than offsets boat depreciation.

OK, if the above sounds like a bit of a sales pitch, it was, sorry, but here's turnkey Med boating that I have for sale. It's 20min Nice Airport (Easyjet from Liverpool). This is true turnkey med boating, ie berth boat introduction to guardiennage man cleaner. Only for sale becuase we are getting bigger boat and berth. Berth is about €145k in addition to boat.

Agree with Scotty Almerimar is largest and cheapest, its on Costa Blanca
We are in Puerto de la Duquesa on the Costa Del Sol just west of Estepona. A 12m berth to rent costs about £3200 not as cheap as the aforementioned.

Agree also about crap weather and tides inhibiting you boating pleasure in UK
We've got a Sealine F36 and a Fairline 50 o berths in Duquesa, been set up since March. Dont miss the English weather at all, have full access to Marina 24/7
Grrrrreat

Re: Show me ..

afore you sell up and spend all that wedge down in the sun have you considered downsides of having your boat 1000 miles away.

First you gotta get to it.
Nice 4am start for drive to airport.
How much to park car at airport for 3/4 days each trip
Price of flights,80.00 ish if booked months and months in advance other wise 160.00 or more.
Cost of cab to marina
When you arrive you will have to sort out any little jobs that need doing or run up interesting little bill with marina.
Hoping to stay aboard for duration of visit?
Not if you want to sleep not unless you add 5k+ for airconditioning
Lets go for a jaunt and so need to fill her up ..........How Much for fuel..Ouch.
Um last day and need to be at airport for last flight home arriving early morning still prob get a couple of hours sleep before work.
Goody Goody we can do it all over again next week.
Ps if you need it you can get accomodation in Nice for under 50.00 a night but its miles from the marinas so be prepared to keep lots a small euros handy for the taxi./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

We moved to the Med this year and we wont be coming back to the UK in the foreseeable future but there are disdavantages. Unless you are loaded, you're going to have to put up with the delights of Ryanair/Easy Jet and if you've got a family, you're looking at spending a few £'000's on air fares every year over and above normal boating costs. Finding a berth in the popular areas like Cote d'Azur, Balearics and the Costas can be difficult and expensive and maintaining the boat will cost you more because you will have to pay somebody to look after your boat (guardiennage) and you will have less time to do your own maintenance. The weather, whilst obviously being generally hotter and more settled than the UK especially during May to September is not year round wall to wall sunshine - we saw snow in Majorca in March whilst on our boat!
Having said that, being able to swim in clear warm water was a huge plus for us and the feeling of being on holiday everytime we visit our boat still has'nt diminished
I dont know any areas that you may find cheap berths close to an airport but I dont think areas like Croatia, the French coast west of Marseille and the Spanish coast near Alicante are quite full up yet and you may find berths in these areas

Depending on where you live, why not just move the boat to a nicer location with unrestricted access to the sea?

We are currently going through all the pros and cons of relocating to Majorca.

On straightforward costs the mooring in Majorca is £3300 pa compared to £2900 on Windermere. Incidently I am led to believe that the mooring shortage is for moorings 10m+ and there is not really a problem below this. (This remains to be proved however)

The next biggest cost is getting there. Although Windermere is great we still need our three weeks of sunshine in the Med. For these holidays we normally rent accomodation at £1000+ per week in summer (say £2600 for three weeks including one "off-peak). As we will have our accomodation on the boat, this money saved will pay for the air fares & taxis/car hire.

Using our holidays wisely we should be able to visit the boat 8-9 times a year compared to about 16 times this year. Daughters also plan to spend another 6 weeks on board.

Although fewer visits we will actually spend more time on boat, between 45-50 days compared to about 30 on Windermere,

Yes, not guaranteed good weather early or late season but still likely to be better than Cumbria (it was bloody freezing yesterday!) and having the Med fix every month from March to October will do for us.

Yipppeeeee, it's raining today and yesterday !!!

Mind you given the last time I can honestly remember rain here was in May, that is not such a cynical note ...

BTW --- did BA return last week for £39 plus taxes , charges etc... Booked day before.

Accept for those of you with kids all air carriers are pricy during school holidays compared to other times of year. same also true for weekend - break travel. Strange that. However having spent last week working in Palma , Mallorca .NEVER Again. Just around the corner from magalluf... what a dump.

Re: SoF

Hey Learner, we're out this weekend so please turn the rain off and none of that Mistral rubbish either. Your're right about air fares. They're much higher around half terms and bank holidays. I'm paying about £200 a ticket this time on Bmi
Magaluf is indeed the a**ehole of the Med but away from the Club 18-30 areas like Magaluf and Arenal, Mallorca is very attractive and a good boating area, at least when it stops snowing

I think you've sussed it about right. The days you do spend on your boat in the Med are generally 'quality' days compared to the UK; less days spent staring out of the windows at the horizontal rain wondering what to do

Re: SoF - Weather Outlook

Rain has been switched off today. Bright blue skys but with beautiful snow-capped peaks on the Alps. Forecast variable for the rest of week . One day sunny next rain. Outlook for weekend looks good at moment , but since when have they ever got the forecast right here outside June-September ? Winds have disappeared for the moment.

Never want to see Palma/ Magaluf again. Plenty of Fish and Chip shops in Accrington.
