The idea that a vessel being delivered would have to be coded seems daft, as the added cost and time would make the delivery cost prohibitive.

Why have no delivery skippers commented on this thread?

I have,

as i understand it boats on delivery do not need to be coded. however if somebody pays for a berth on the delivery trip then yes it does need to be coded as it becomes a commercial trip. what you determine by paying is a little bit of a grey area it seems and my interpretation of it is if you contribute to the running cost of the boat whilst on delivery then it is commercial and therefore needs coding, contributing to the running cost would be any expense relating to the boat such as fuel, marina fees etc but it seems not food.

It should be noted that the boat should have the required safety kit on board, as the boat gets larger there is more stuff to put on board. vessels over 13.7 m have to comply by law to minimum equipment on board. I have a safety bag i take with me on all trips and also take my own liferaft.

I think you will find that the reason some delivery skippers have not commented on this is that they are given the job on a fixed price and if they can find a crew that will pay their own way to get some miles then the skipper/company make more money!! as i said earlier my crew will get paid and all their expenses covered to get them back home.

As I said in an earlier post, perhaps the MCA could give a definitive answer.

They already have done but since you don't believe anything anyone else says I suggest you give them a ring after the festive season. I don't suppose you will though.

Anyone else wants to know, the number for the coding department is....023808396400.... and they are very helpful.

It is not down to cost or time, it is down to what is within the law.

Your average privately owned boat that the owner wants moved is of no concern to the MCA as long as that owner is not doing it for profit. So all you have to worry about is your insurance company.

No not clever really, although it depends who you are comparing me with:)

Go on, give the MCA a ring. I have even saved you the trouble of looking up the number. 023808396400.

You may even learn something. But then again;)
