What is the reason for having a Short Shaft outboard?
I have just bought a new dinghy with a transom and I have discovered that I need a bit more power (5hp+) Would a Short Shaft engine be too small? I currently have a Mariner 2hp and that cavitates so easily because there is only about 1 inch of water above the cavitation plate.

Perhaps you need a long shaft (no comments please!)?

I've had a lot of unsolicited e-mails lately from people claiming to have a solution to the problem of short shafts. Would you like me to forward them to you? :))))))))))))

Bill.

Shouldn't problems relating to the size of your shaft be addressed to Auntie Paulines problem page in MBY (I am sure Tom will take up Paulines suggestion in the MBY post below).

Although it may be a hard one for her to deal with I am sure her repost would offer you satisfaction :)

Short shaft outboards are designed for boats with low transom heights, and vice versa. Irrespective of how much water is over the cavitation plate, the plate should be an inch or so above the bottom of the transom - that's the critical measurement. Very few tenders would need long shaft engines.

Agreed, unless the "Elk"'s got a strange dinghy, a short shaft will be fine, whatever "Elkie", or Pauline, might say. A long shaft could cause problems of access - to shallow areas !! Aunt Whisper says stick with the length you've got.

Just thought I'd bring proceeding up a few notches in sophistication - same animal but with European chic /forums/images/icons/smile.gif . Your former name was too much like a Scottish rodent or boring sweet and hailed from the Colonies. Of course I do accept that you may be a totally decent sort of person in spite of all this !!

WHY

Why oh Why oh Why? Dont people like my Moose, B1 is constantly on about the way he walks and now you have offended him be calling him an Elk, being Canadian is far better than being European/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

And by the way he is a very sophisticated Moose /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: WHY

When is Moose open season in the UK?

I'm a damn good shot, and quite fancy some Moose antlers over the fireplace.

I always understood SS to mean 'standard' shaft as opposed to 'long' shaft which was the one required in special cases. As others have said standard or short will do for a wooden transomed inflatable tender.

First time I've looked at the way your moose walks. Good party trick for a quadruped...

SHAME ON YOU.
Altogether now - SAVE OUR MOOSE - SAVE OUR MOOSE - POACHER ON THE LOOSE - SAVE OUR MOOSE.
I like Brendan's camouflage suit, though it would look a bit "action man" on a boat I suppose.
