Had a thought the other day.
What a mess it would make of the side of your boat if you forgot to remove the shore power cable and left your berth with it attached. Would it rip the side out or just the plug from the lead. Then I got to thinking "I bet a few have"
So am I right. Did it make a mess ? and is there a tale to go with it.

We do an auto eject socket that shoots it out from the plug on engine starting (designed for fire engines).. could work - only problem is that some one would have to catch it to stop it going in the water!!!!

I've seen it in my marina - while the skipper was shouting at his wife to untie quicker (as is often the case), he managed to pull the entire post out of the pontoons deck.... dohhh!!

Last summer in Granville I had the p[leasure to tie up alongside a blue flagged pompus git who had not long had his boat but was always wanting to be the centre of attraction during his stay. He certainly was as he left because he forgot to remove his shore power lead and having had his wife let go the ropes he moved forwad at a smart rate of knots . There was a rather loud crack and the power tower in the centre of the pontoon was ripped away and followed in his wake. Not only that but he continued to head out to sea leaving his wife to haul in the wreckage. We never saw him, or the power post again.

My favourite trick leaving from Haslar because the power socket was on the "wrong" side of the boat, used to figure of eight the cable on cleat near tower, cable got shorter and shorter and shorter and then broke somewhere in the middle and had to be renewed completely.

I know of somebody in Chichester who left his berth with the power fully attached, he managed to rip the fitting out of the back of his boat, this would have been fine had the power not been live.
I believe there was a very loud bang, lots of sparks/smoke e.t.c!!

Just make a big red sign saying "unplug electric first" and tie it to your stern line. That way you would not be able to untie your lines without being reminded about the power. Unless of course you forget to tie the sign on :)

It happens even to the professionals. A leading Boat Broker on the Thames was on a demo and left the berth and wondered was the boat was slow and gave it some more welly. The flying cable missed the punters - just.

I can tell you a story about the boat behind where your new boat was moored.

Not sure if you know the owner, his boat is currently having its engine rebuilt after snapping two pistons and bending two other!!!! The story relates to the boat he borrowed!!

yup, done it.
Disconnected the lead from the pontoon, but forgot to bring it ashore.
was just leaving the berth at Hythe when I remembered that the cable was still on the pontoon, tied up!. Smacked it into astern and missed the lock as a result, could have been worse.
Now I have a check list.

The boat does a lovely little wiggle, and then the cable comes flying like it is jet powered /forums/images/icons/smile.gif strait towards you, and the boat shoots forwards. Then you remember /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif shore power.

Not that I am saying it has happened to me /forums/images/icons/blush.gif<font color=yellow> once<font color=yellow>
