I am sure this has been raised before but done a search and no luck. I am looking to buy a circa 1985 boat and need to know what the VAT requirements are. I believe its proof of "residency" in the UK before a certain date. Any help appreciated.

Can you contact the builder? as if you have a hull number they can probably trace the VAT record if it was paid.. This is assuming that the boat was built and sold within the UK of course.

Steve,

If the boat was built before 1 Jan 1985 and not used for commercial purposes and you can prove that it was in a EU country on the 1st Jan 1993 then there should be no VAT liability.

The proof of being in the EU needs to be an original marina or boatyard receipt. Note that not all the current EU countries were members in 1993.

I don't know what the situation is for boats that have spent part of their time as commercial vessels.

VAT hasn't been paid on my own boat but I have a receipt from a boatyard for the required date. So far I've not been asked to show it.

All IMHO

I have been asked three times (England, France, Portugal) for evidence that my yacht was built in the EC before 1985 - but never that it was in the EC on 1st Jan 1993.

(Just as well, as it wasn't).
