hi all

before i tell this tale i must say a massive massive thankyou the volvopaul off here he is a very very experience chap who knows just about everthing you could know about volvo engines

ok so just got home from a long round trip bloody knackered now

well not as good as yesterday im affraid the engine man got to the boat at 11am and it was out the water ready for him to look at

first he checked both legs over and found water contamination in both legs and worn bushes so they both need a good overall and service not a good start

we then had the boat put in the water and did a full check on the engines doing various stuff for quite some time on a full sea trial, when all was done i left the paul to do the rest of his stuff whilst i chatted to the seller. paul then called us over to discuss what he had found there were a couple of bits and bobs new turbo gasket required on one engine new alternator belts and tensioners required on both engines.

then he hit me with the big one the sump on the port side engine was very badly corroded and needs replacing :mad:
to say i was gutted is an under statement we discused what was involved and was told the engine would need to come out or something close to do the job

the seller then said ok lets get the volvo dealer at the marina to have a look and confirm what paul had said and they came and had a look and agreed it was a monster of a job to do this , at this point both myself and the seller were gutted neither of us wanted this but we were stuck with it and had to deal with it.

so the outcome is i have still purchased the boat but at a much lower price to cover all the work that is required on the engines i am happy with this as paul the engineer said apart from this major problem it was possibly the nicest s37 he had seen which is nice to know.

so the boat is being transported to a boat yard where paul will carry out all the required repairs and then service the engines and it will then be all ready for us for the coming season

once again thanks paul you really did me proud today and saved me a fortune shame what has happened but at least i got all the repair prices off the price of the boat which i am happy with

Good result Really, as when VP has woven his magic, you will have a great boat, with engines and legs in top condition and you can look fwd to some great boating.
 
I was in a similar situation recently, firstly having to call off the deal due to a potentially big engine issue, then subsequently when that was sorted, proceeding with a deal allowing for a couple of other issues which needed to be resolved and renegotiating the price accordingly.

It sounds like you have the assurances you need from the pros to continue with the deal and the necessary financial allowance to see you ok; so go for it. It's really hardto close the door and walk away when you are that close and it sounds like the underlying condition is good otherwise.

Time for a little more patience and hopefully things will come together for you.

When you say the leg bushes were worn, what exactly are you referring to?

Good to see you had VP by your side - the guy will have godlike status on the forum soon :D
 
I think this is the best way to buy a boat. Something is always wrong with a boat but at least you know what the problems are and will get them properly sorted and hopefully all for the same price you where originally going to pay.

It's well known that anything volvopaul touches will then be trouble free for at least 5 years. I believe he whispers things into the air intakes:D:D:D

Ok, then you are getting a better boat in the end than you had bargained for !
Actually, good to hear the seller was also sensible.Another step closer.
 
There are nylon bushes that go into the ends of the steering yoke, and rotate when you trim.

Worn bushes = waggly steering.

They think that VP could be related to the Stig, and that he has an aura that surrounds him, he could have even been Midus in a previous life! :cool:

Well done Shawn for getting your boat, Paul will make a good job of the repairs, if not we know where his boat is;)
 
Thanks for everyones kind words but it's my job which I enjoy very much.

When I returned home last night and watched DIY SOS there the guys who bring joy into peoples lives who need and deserve it.
 
Lanerboy you sound a bit down in the dumps in your opening post but actually this is a great result imho. You've had the engines thoroughly checked and all the repairs needed (which are just maintenance issues, not indicators of a "bad boat") are going to be done at a sensible VolvoPaul price and proper trustworthy VolvoPaul quality, and the seller is paying. When you add in the fact that otherwise the boat is in great shape you're going to come out of this deal with a fully serviced boat all maintained up to date and an excellent clean start to your ownership of the boat. Lucky the seller was so reasonable about it, and good on you for sticking with the deal and not panicking. Overall it sounds like you have a great result here.

yes i completly agree with what you say and i didnt mean to sound down in my first post quite the opposite really, the seller was a bit down as he never had the boat surveyed when he purchased it 18 months ago which was silly on his part. like you say the seller agreed to knock a substansial ammount off the already agreed price which should more than cover my repairs bill, then i will have a boat that is 99% perfect as far as a 13 year old boat goes for the same price i had origanally agreed

i felt a little sorry for the seller as he and his wife are great people and i genuinly dont think they new about it as its quite difficult to see paul took pics with his phone to show us both

i am very happy with the outcome and cannot wait for paul to get stuck into the repairs and then for me to get it to weymouth all fixed and ready to go

Let's be having those photo's on here now it's all confirmed:cool: The ones from the Ebay ad looked like it was a very well cared for boat cosmetically... as said, going by them and the engine / drvie work you'll have done, I cna't think of a better outcome for you, well done:cool:
 
One thing for me, what has caused the sump to corrode? On the inside it is full of oil, which unless badly broken down should not be corrosive, and on the outside fresh air. Yes, there might be a bit of brine in the air, but enough to corrode the sump?

Don't be. Were it not for the intervention of VP, you would have been stuck with their pile of poo and you can bet that had you gone back to them a few weeks after the sale asking them to contribute to the cost of rectifying the boat, they would have politely told you where to get off. Agree with jfm. Every boat has faults and you've been fortunate enough to have the faults on your new boat rectified at somebody else's cost and you will likely come out of it with a nice, reliable boat that you can happily use for many seasons. A definite result
