A good friend of mine is looking to swap his trusty Fairline Turbo 36 for an aft cabin F43, his turbo is a bit special as it has a dinette in the saloon, and was re engined with twin 350 yanmars, its all leather saloon with aft teak deck, Hamble based, any takers? plug over!!.

What I want to know is, are there any forum members out there who have one of these F43s or have had them in the past years, just looking for known faults, sea keeping mpg etc, this one has volvo TAMD 43L 430 hp engines the ones ive been associated with have had the lower powered TAMD63p 370hp engines , so this one should be a bit of a hit when cruising.

We have ribbed him with all the sealine jokes now, hes still keen as hes an aft cabin man through and through.

Pm me for details of the turbo if anyones interested, he might take a small part ex.

Hi Paul. Last year we looked at F43's and F42/5's before deciding against a flybridge and going for the much underrated S48 instead.

I did quite a bit of research on the F43 - seemingly they were well built, and do not have any recognised hull problems. Engine wise, I thought the smaller 370 hp units would be a bit on the weedy side, but was assured by various owners that they are not at all underpowered. Nevertheless, I would still have gone for the 430 hp Volvos.

All in all, a great boat. We have a couple of friends with them, and both love them to bits, (both having the larger units).

I've had both the Turbo 36 (which is an absolute classic IMHO) and the 410/F43. What can I say? I think the 410/F43 is one of Sealine's best; certainly this was borne out by it's long model life which was the best part of 15yrs or more. Mine had the TAMD63P's which felt plenty powerful enough; with 43L's she should go like stink, maybe 33-34kts. My F43 was pretty much faultless over the period we owned it and she's a pretty good seaboat as well.
The things I didn't like were more characteristics of the boat than faults. For example the head and shoulder room in the aft cabin is tight for 6ft+ peeps. The cockpit feels a little unsafe at speed as it's raised and there are only low handrails. The boat has a lot of windage for it's waterline length (tip: leave the cockpit canopy panels up for manouvering in a marina to reduce windage). The bowthruster is underpowered and the anchor (10kg) is relatively small (cannot be increased in size due to Sealine anchor stowage arrangement). I hated the Sealine bit of string system for adjusting the flybridge helm seat. The galley countertops in my boat were high gloss wood veneer which scratched easily (I believe these were corian on later boats)
On the plus side, the 410/F43 is huge inside. I particularly liked the separate saloon and dinette which means that all the detritus of eating doesn't clutter up the saloon and the boat can comfortably sleep 8 peeps. We had 13 overnighting on ours once. The lower helm ergonomics are spot on and it's an easy boat to drive from inside. The cockpit table and canopy storage arrangement under the flybridge overhang is excellent; I dont know why other builders haven't copied it.
All in all, an excellent boat and if your mate gets a good one, it should give many years of good service
