I understand that there are Sea Eagles on the Isle of Wight and this might explain what was spotted on passage between Poole and the Needles Lighthouse a few weeks ago. A raptor, perhaps a Sea Eagle, flying towards the Isle of Wight with a gull in its talons.

Has anybody see this sort of thing or know who to report it to. I'd be quite interested if this type of thing is common.

I don’t know about that area, but our local county wildlife association encodes reports of sightings. I have seen an osprey at Newtown, so a positive identification would be required, though I think I have heard of white-tailed eagles coming south. You do get oddities sometimes, and I have even seen a common skua in the Channel on two occasions.

The re-introduction programme on the IOW has been going on for some time. The movement to Poole Harbour is recent and unfortunately one was found dead earlier this year. There is however a pair of Ospreys nesting somewhere around the harbour.

They can often be spotted in the Newtown area, there's a very pleasant and helpful chap oftern in the bird hide at Newtown, he does bird walks and talks from time time, Jim Baldwin, he's on facebook. Generally people are coy about where they are roosting

The Sea Eagles from the Isle of Wight do travel long distances. They've been seen all over East Anglia including Holkam Bay in Norfolk.

The local 'Shooting Conservationists' were upset because they've managed to have the reintroduction of Sea Eagles stopped in Norfolk only to find the southern ones come up for weekend trips.

They starred on Breakfast this morning - catching fish in the harbour and feeding their 2 chicks. The nest is somewhere on the Arne nature reserve.
