Screw Ripoffs... But Screwfix is good!

Normally I get all my screws, tools etc from Screwfix - but I ran out of 8 x 2½" C/s Chipboard screws, so as I was in my local emporium(Atlantic Country Superstore), I picked up a box. It was when I got home that I realised I had paid £8.91 for a box of 200. I checked with Screwfix and could have got them for £2.18/200!! - Exactly the same screws!!
Is this normal? a markup up of over 400%??
Almost the same with building paper - Local large Jewsons quoted over £80/roll; went to small Jewsons and got it for £50 but found Atlantic was £29!! - I complained bitterly to Jewsons who gave me a credit note immediately without any argument - they must know they are overcharging!

Why are we always being ripped off?

Incidently I have used Screwfix for several years now and they are normally excellent, they even have stainless(A2) screws now - much cheaper than the chandlery.

You think that's bad?

Try popping down to your local ironmongers. They tend to sell screws pre-packed in packs of about 15 for £1.50

I agree that Screwfix are excellent - and now they even sell bilge paint and Anti-fouling

Average punters don\'t compare !

Thats the problem .... Its like you can get same bits in caravan shops as in chandlers, just a different name put on it !

EG : Hatch Stays .....
Caravan Shop - named window stays, costs about 2.99 each
Chandlers - named .... hatch stays, can be 3-4 x price

I compared them and they are IDENTICAL

Water pumps for galley ...... another bonanza !!!

People don't check, people blindly pay .... so we get rip-offs ! I have even seen evidence of a price label badly removed from an item and then placed on another shops shelves at inflated price !!!! Now that takes some beating !

Nigel ...
Bilge Keelers get up further ! I only came - cos they said there was FREE Guinness !

It pays to shop around

Screwfix are generally good, but...

Sometimes they are higher priced than your local engineering supplier. Look long and hard at every price - sometimes the engineering supply shop will be cheaper at some sizes & not others.

Good hunting, regards

Re: It pays to shop around

Screwfix are not that brilliant on the stainless stuff. The 2 companies I use for the Stainless screws bolts and stuff are Jones Industrial Fasteners and Sea Screw, also felix fasteners is a good bet. Sea screw do a mixed tub of 1500 assorted screws or nuts and bolts for about 20 quid. Handy for keeping in the boats tool store for those odd times you need them.

Yeah! I know its running rough, but your lucky its running at all!!

I would be very careful when buying stainless fastenings from Screwfix. Their prices are v.good but their stainless is A2, not A4 which is the best for marine use.

Have a good wooden boat day

Don't forget to add on P&P when dealing with Screwfix though I do agree they are cheaper. However sometimes it's just more convenient to pop into a store and buy what you need. Lets not forget the store has to stock the stuff for gawd knows how long before they sell it.

Had a halogen bulb go in the bathroom at home. Homebase wanted £5.89. Local electrical trade shop, 61p. Thought of buying 'em from the trade shop and flogging 'em to Homebase.
