Well now, Scotland isnt a Nationalist "Area". Its a Country! It Is a member of the EU and a simple uncoupling from the rest of the UK wont make any difference to that. Just because Jose says it's so, doesnt necessarily mean that he's wrong... but on this occasion???!!! There is no way on Earth that the EU would stand for a Scotland outside their influence.

This suggestion is not even making the news here in Ireland so its clearly not seen as a worthy point of discussion. Smells a bit like a desperate attempt to influence/bully people who may want to vote for uncoupling but might be worried about imagined consequences. If in doubt, muddy the clear waters!

Spot on.

Two countries, Scotland and England formed a union. That union was the country that joined the EU. If Scotland breaks the union we will be back where we were - two new countries will have been formed. Why do we assume that one of them is automatically a continuing member of the EU and the other one isn't?

Scotland is not considering becoming independent from the UK - it is considering ending the UK.

Nope.
The UK will still exist as England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Fair enough. The point I was trying to make was that Scotland leaving wouldn't leave England, Wales, N. Ireland as separate independent countries.

I am amazed by the tripe that is voiced over this
It isn't going to happen, sorry to disappoint but it isn't

Oh yes it is and you know it. You seem to be in denial what an opportunity we have. Once Scotland gets the yes Indy vote Wales and possibly Ireland will follow. There’s talk of constructing the North Sea tunnel over to Esbjerg in Denmark this will connect us to Europe. How good would that be.

We are all lumbered with the EU - Scotland will vote NO and there will be no EU referendum....we have all already lost our independence. Sorry but the bureaucrats have already locked us in and Germany is in charge....

You would need English experience to build it ( & poles to drive the tunneling machine now the irish have had a taste of free EU dosh)

It is such a pity that a man as talented as Mr Salmond reportedly is should exercise his talents in a negative, divisive way. We will all be losers out of this, except possibly him.

So far not too much light, but a lot more self control than some questions have achieved.

So, UK belongs to Europe - Scotland leaves UK, UK is smaller, numerically etc. The question was only partly tongue in cheek, but it is a bit interesting when you consider the implications for a relatively simple activity like sailing a little boat about the place.

Then Scotland is outside the EU and has to make its peace with them in the best way it can.

UK2, the new entity, is smaller in economic and population terms, therefore gets less MEPs and less jobs for the boys.

None of which will make a bit of difference to the regulations that might be imposed if I take my boat that far north.

Will I need, special insurance, a different courtesy flag, special regulations on red diesel, which anchor I have to carry? Will there be a different certificate of competence required, hygiene regulations, specific ports of entry and exit, special or different VAT treatment......?

There's an irish saying. It transaltes to something like "It's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission". So plan your plans... do as you do.. dont sweat the petty stuff... (deffo dont pet the sweatty stuff).. enjoy! sail your boat and worry about the stuff you can influence
