Saltire as ensign

So how do they cope with warranted Blues then?

Warranted blue ensigns are perfectly legal and acceptable. I did once have to explain the significance of ours (a defaced blue)to a French customs man who did ask the question and was satisfied with my answer. Normally we would wear a red ensign anyway when abroad but this time we were in company with other club yachts.

The Saltire is not an ensign, nor is it valid sewn into a red cloth as a sad attempt to make it look like one. It does of course tell all around that the owner is either ignorant of maritime law or is being deliberately insulting to it, neither viewpoint being very complimentary. The same goes for the so called Cornish ensign, it might be a bit of fun in local waters but outside of UK waters it is invalid, illegal and a deliberate snub to proper procedure.

Wear whatever trips you triggers as a house flag by all means, but ensigns are there for the purpose of proper identification of nationality.

None of which of course is of any relevance to Webby trolling hard.

There is a Scots red ensign:

This was flown by the Royal Scots Navy (or Old Scots Navy), which vanished with the Act of Union in 1707. I've never seen a boat flying this however, whereas lots of Scots boats fly the Saltire as an ensign.

One of our local yachts- Elinca, a Challenge 67- flies this from the spreaders.

(Shock horror, I have read an ensign thread!!)

Flying from the spreaders does not count, it is what she wears at her stern, but the old Scots Royal Ensign is too like a Red Ensign (which it predates), to be respected, that is why it is mistaken for 'a sad attempt' like in the post above.
Webbys wind up is getting going nicely though.

.
I ordered one from MrFlag.com - not cheap but good quality and the correct colour. Here's a MrFlag saltire flying from a local boat:

Looks braw eh? I'll post a picture of Fairwinds wearing hers when I get one.

Anyone else who flies the Saltire, why not post a pic here?

Come on Scotland, get voting on independence; you've no idea how many of us English support it. Hang though, I'd better keep that quiet, if you find out we're in favour of it you'll never vote yes.

...once he starts to wear his Saltire, he will be able to buy one in the gift shop in Oban just beside the 'see you Jimmy' wigs.

Am I right in thinking that the relationship between the saltire and s-y-J wig is the same as that between a warranted ensign and club burgee? That is to say that one is only supposed to wear the saltire (on the boat) while one is wearing the see-you-Jimmy wig (on one's head).

Indeed yes, though it may be permissable to wear the Saltire without the wig, (some real Scots already have the complexion, red hair and bunnet anyway) you will always see the wig wearers with their Saltire (notice the use of caps. here, respect)
Webby will have been wearing the wig ever since his naturalization came through so the Saltire is the next step in his conversion to a real Celt. I hear he is learning the Gaelic too, and will be posting exclusively in that language shortly, should make his theories easier to follow.

Whilst flying my Saltaire in Scotland and my Southern Cross (to show Percentages Virginian origins), would it be acceptable to fly "the Red hanky" the battle flag of the lounge?

If so, what would be the best / most correct way to fly the three of them bearing in mind that I am a motorboater ?

Regards mikej

To fly the Red Hanky you must have a female member of the crew who has somewhat liberal tendencies I wish you luck with the search.:D
