I've done this a few times to all the pulleys with all the belts on by wrapping sand paper around the end of a stick that had the end shaped in a pulley groove shaped V.....hence keeping body bits out of harms way. When done at the begining of the season the pulleys stay clean enough during the season without painting as long as you use the engines often enough.
