Why do you not just go Lowestoft / Grimsby. Forget Wells You can nip up there in your car one day & get some fish & chips if that is your want. It is only 106 miles to Grim Grimsby, which took me <18 hours both times. I did it in a smaller boat than yours. Have to be carefull of lobster pots. .The first time there were thousands in the wash , but very well marked. I hit 3 in the night off Blakney ( I was going clockwise). Watch out for the firing range just S, before the Humber. I got a sharaking:rolleyes: The culture shock of Grimsby often does one good .The yacht club makes up for it in exceptional friendliness
You could then nip up to Hull to get some normality back into your life, then Hartlepool, or Scarborough. Entering the Humber at night is great because it is quite a challenging bit of navigation. The hardest of the whole trip in my opinion, as an east coast sailor.
What would be ideal, would be to get to Grimsby when the lock is on free flow. If you do go there instead of Hull try not to arrive at the end of work day, as the lock keeper will make you wait for wind farm boats to enter exit first. That being said i believe that most work is complete, so there should not be as many as when I went both times.
If you get a SW wind & arrive at the Humber in the dark you may well decide to motor into the wind for the last few miles, as you get tired & have to dodge shipping, so a SW wind would give you a great sailing wind. 6kts should be an easy average.
Grim Grimsby. Well I used to think so but it’s really quite a nice place.

There will likely be some swell from the N. It’s well worth phoning Wells Harbourmaster and get him to lead you in. It’s part of the service and will reassure you when the waves suddenly accelerate you on the way in !

I suppose if one is comparing it with what one is used to then perhaps one would say that

I have more of the town & a few of the grass growing through the concrete slabs of the demolished areas. However, I think viewers get the idea.
I did not take many of the boarded up shops in the high street as I was worried about the safety of my camera.
I did see the note on one shop about " only one teenager allowed in at a time please".
I expect shoplifting is a way of life there.
On my walk to find a supermarket I saw 3 lots of arguments.
I did have a flashback moment when I walked over a concrete bridge over the railway. It reminded me of the "No hiding Place " series of Inspector Lockhart days on TV, or Dixon of Dock Green & Billy Liar films. Straight out of the movies. Just needed the steam up over the sides & the lad with a gun running from the police.
I still would like to go back there though. I certainly want to try Hull & see where one of my relations fell in the dock when he was military band master at the opening of a new dock . Bought disgrace to the family ? ? ?. For our club cruise I had it on the itinery. Unfortunately it was deemed too far for the smaller boats as weather was not playing ball.

On Friday morning I spoke with the Harbourmaster by phone, and I will certainly call again if I think it looks necessary. High water tomorrow is 7.13pm and I am hoping to arrive about 5pm. For my draft of 1.6m, and being spring tide, I should be able to enter 2½ hours either side of HW. I always love a challenge and feel this should not be too much of a challenge and may be fun accelerating in. I will try to rig up a video camera to capture some of the "fun".

Congrats on your voyage to date and good decision. I know Wells well ( sorry) but wouldn't enter there with a strong northerly. be prepared for strong flood tides but it is an incredible place. Less Hooray Henry than Overy Staithe or Blakeney. Decent supermarket if you follow the main road east past the quay then south for a while. ( about 500 yards maybe??)

So you visited on a good day then ?

Stretch your legs, The town is vibrant and with a lot of wealth. it really is no different to anywhere else. needs a lot of development and given Imingham is the busiest port in the country, ive no idea why it has not happened. walk around Southampton, Portsmouth, Brighton or Bournmouth, and your see everything and worse than you find in Grimsby.

DaydreamBeliever,
Read your post again. I suppose if one is comparing it with what one is used to then perhaps one would say that.

Coming from a man who apparently hangs about in Essex. Youd do well to meet up with my pal who thinks life does not exist North of Buckinghamshire. Im not from Grimsby. I used to have a prejudicial opinion of the place, now I know better. What I am used to is no better, well the sailing is. Wealth has spread accross the country and unfortunately the idiots who think they are better come with them. Ive been to that dreadful harbour that is run down and seen more life with boatowners in a day than you ever see in your typical south coast graveyard of boats.

I know this is about overnight stops but it is no reason to allow this excellent thread to morph into an anchor thread

Its not a competition.

Any port in a storm is a welcome port.

A few more smilies would go down well

:)

I would be interested to understand how you define "vibrant".
A few shops blaring out annoying music & smelling of curry. ( sorry that is not meant to be racist, I like curry, I am trying to create a picture) A dingy night club with a boarded front, 2 bouncers on the door & a flashy sign over the top. A couple of pubs with drunks in the street at chucking out time, to keep the police busy. Or do you have another definition.

As for "lot of wealth" Yes a town can have a lot of wealth, but if it is in the hands of a few who are sucking it from the less fortunate then it is not exactly a good sign.

What i saw was a place that was run down. Low investment. That demonstrates an unwillingness of industry to support the population. That is possibly due to poverty, leading to a lower level of education & a lower skill set & a continuing downward cycle. Until that can be broken the place will never improve. That can be said for many places around the Uk. I just pick Grimsby because it is the one place that I saw what seemed like an air of moral despair, or frustration. 3 fights in just one walk to the high street was enough. Boarded up shops, or scruffy supermarkets, do not give one any confidence. It did not make me feel that there was any attempt to improve the place.
By what one is used to - I might suggest Hackney 35 years ago was a hopeless mess. But by the time I retired I could see the change. If Grimsby had the same it would transform it. However those without the "wealth" that you speak of would be no better off. Worse in fact.
Sorry about the thread drift but conversation does have drift.
As I said, I would like to go back & see if it has changed. The club was very friendly & I overheard a committee meeting that could have been transposed straight over our own management meeting, with all the same issues that we have faced in the past. It would be interesting to see how they have managed them.

I did see a post somewhere that they are not taking visiting yachts as spaces were taken by wind farm vessels. It would be good if it brings income but there is ample space for some more pontoons so I hope that they have not shut the place off & that it is still open to one & all. It is worth a visit.

Humber Cruising Association run a good and cheap bar. You can get takeaways delivered to the club house. No need to go into town.

Some people like to cook their own food aboard their boat. So they need supplies of fresh food. Eating on a boat does not always have to revolve around poor quality meals & takeaways. I do tend to add brownie points to a new port, by the availabilty of supplies & I expect Concerto will feel the same, when he gets into the far north.
When I was last there I was surprised how cheap the beer was. But it was Bombadier & one sometimes has a job to give that away. However, after a long trip a welcoming club (which it was), & a pint, still goes down well.
I understand that Concerto is going to Hull & that has been vastly improved. I am interested in his view of the place. The trip up the Humber will be an interesting exercise in navigation
